(Anonymous) 2010-08-10 08:33 am (UTC)(link)Despite the fact that my obsession died years ago, I simply cannot bring myself to read fic for Lord of the Rings. To this day, no other fandom has been that way for me. I've had friends tell me I'm being ridiculous when I told them that the books were on a level that I think should be untouchable. They just didn't understand.
I think it's because I was so affected by Tolkien's work that I simply couldn't bring myself to see anything other than the piece itself. I set it at a level that, honestly, was far too high. It felt absolutely perfect the way it was, and reading fanfics I felt would only spoil it.
