That isn't how it works. Sometimes we're not "fixing mistakes" - we just loved the original work so much that we don't want it to end.

I don't know, what if it is the 'fill in the gaps' kind of fanfic? Where the story fits into the canon beautifully (I know, YMMV) and it could have been written by the original author because the characters are IC and the story has the same tone as the original story, etc.

What is wrong with those kind of fanfics? I know that the horribly written, OOC or AU fanfics or the stories with lots of OCs can leave a bad taste in your mouth if you really care about the canon, but these are not the only kind of fanfics.

[identity profile] dar-actually.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Not everyone, not all the time.
Some people really are trying to fix the perceived "mistakes", because they can't just appeciate something as is, they'd rather it was how they think it should be, which is kinda disrespectful.
Other people, they'll try to fix things that they know aren't mistakes, but still didn't like anyway, like maybe their favorite character died or favorite pairing broke up or something. It's a little more straightforward and somewhat understandable, compared to the other group.
And some other people, they're not trying to fix anything, they're just trying to be flattering to the original material, or just have fun playing with it, or exercise their imaginations by seeing what else is possible in those fictions.

Eh, I only care about the fic for stuff I really, really love, because that's the stuff that I want to explore more about the world or get into the characters' heads. Sure, the badfic just hurts that much worse, but the good stuff makes it worth it.

I know some authors really feel that way and I think it's sad that they don't see it as an expression of enjoyment of their work.

RARELY EVER do you find someone writing fic because they finished a novel and though "oh pfffft I could've done that! *scribble scribble*"

It's because something about that fictional world grabbed at their brain and wouldn't let go. There's a reason why author-inserts are so popular. It's a way to make yourself PART of the story. Not try to take it over or correct it.

[identity profile] blackmare.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I've seen plenty of "fix-it fics," but they're hardly the majority. I think your ideas of why we write these things are pretty badly skewed.

Talk to more writers, OP, rather than making assumptions about their intent. You could open up a whole new and very fun little world for yourself.

[identity profile] caelith.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Or, you could say that it was so inspirational, it kick-started the creativity in a bunch of people.

Bioshock and Silent Hill cracky fic are the best though.

Although I would really love to see a fic bring out the aspect of the fact that Jack's a child inside of an adult body. Not in a kinky way, mind you, but like story wise.

of course Inception needed to be "fixed"

Arthur and Eames didn't have sex
THIS IS A PROBLEM OKAY, CHRISTOPHER NOLAN CLEARLY DOES NOT UNDERSTAND HIS OWN CHARACTERS.
loljk but uhhhhhhh, way to miss the point of fandom OP

If it's just to have fun, I don't mind changing things for a chance at a different perspective.
But if the author makes some sort of statement like, "this is how x should have been handled" or "I'm fixing the flaws the original author forced upon the characters," then I start wondering where the hell they get the nerve to decide that the things they personally disagree with are errors on the author's part.

So I can see where you are coming from.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-09 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah well who gives a fuck.

If someone wants to write Pyramid Head fucking the hell out of James then they can go ahead for all I care.

I can understand why you feel that way. I write fanfiction because almost all of my favorite characters in everything die. It's a much better coping mechanism than becoming one of those bitchy, crazy, butt-hurt fans.
I'm not sure anyone even reads my fics but just posting them makes me feel so much better.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-09 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Where can I find the original bottom right picture??

(Anonymous) 2010-08-09 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I sometimes feel the same way. However, I've come a long way from saying ALL fanfiction was like that.

Also, there is more than one legitimate interpretation of a work. Just saying. (Although it does bother me when the fic author explicitly says they're "fixing" the original. NO. JUST NO.)

(Anonymous) 2010-08-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-08-09 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
In the case of UC Gundam, Tomino is such a bad writer/director that I feel like some of the fanfiction is better written/paced than the actual tv series. (Though Yas' writing in Gundam the Origin is pretty top notch). Basically what I'm saying is that some series are kinda bad but have great characters or the potential to be good if certain things about it are changed ... and in other cases people just want to write sidestories about particular characters or whatever, which isn't really "changing" anything about the original story.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
nah bb, it's more "I like this world, I like the characters, I want them to have more adventures!" including sex, which, ya know, not a lot of fandoms show so much. I know there are some fic writers who seem to take an attitude of "creators got this wrong" and it's disconcertingly presumptuous, but I'm all for people writing whatever they want. =)

[identity profile] michygeary.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Irrational, indeed. As others have said, sometimes fic comes from a great love and appreciation for the original work. We want to take it one step further, or explore a different aspect of it, or maybe we just have an idea for a scene that would be great to see that, for one reason or another, we haven't seen or can't see in the original.

[identity profile] emmyrose224.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't 100% agree, but I see where you're coming from. For example, I read plenty of LOTR fic, but I don't write it because it makes me feel like I can't possibly "fix" anything and therefore, am disrespecting said creation. Which is a little odd, but I still feel weird writing it.

Anyways, I just wanted to say that the LOTR fanart in the secret is adorable. ^_^ I don't encounter enough good fanart.

[identity profile] fandomonymous.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Bonus awesome for using Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, anon! It's funny, because I wrote and fangirl'd every other anime I loved, and when I hit GitS, I just hit...a wall. There were things I wanted answered (mostly for the sake of my dear, dear Batou/Motoko shippy heart) but I could never get the courage to express them in fic form.

At the end of the day it is STILL my favorite anime in the whole world, though. ♥

(Anonymous) 2010-08-10 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Bravo, op, Bravo! This is actually one of the only secrets I've ever seen that's actually reasonable and thoughtful. Yes, fanfiction is pretty much exactly what you say, except you missed the part where it's mostly about fans with sexual confusions getting off on pieces of hard work by the original author.
