I don't think it's sexist. It's the same as saying you find female opera singers voices grating, which is understandable. I too have always found singing in metal music grating. It's not sexist, just a matter of taste.

Their attitudes are sexist, not yours. You have a personal preference but you're not casting judgement on certain artists of the genre because they don't sing a certain way. The instrumentals are just as complicated as all metal.

I prefer female-fronted bands as well (and quite enjoy most of the ones you used in your secret). For a male singer, they have to have a very particular type of sound for me to enjoy them (ie. clear vocals, no snarling or growling), like Sonata Arctica, Kamelot or Northern Kings, for examples.

I have a large preference for female fronted metal bands, but it's just a question of what sound you find more appealing, not whether you only like female-fronted bands because male-fronted bands can't ever be good ever.

You don't have to justify your taste in music to anyone. It's not sexist to prefer female voices and if any losers say it's ~not metal enough for them~ that's their problem. You listen to awesome bands, so just carry on. :)

It's not sexist if it's prefering the marginalized gender. The people who aren't considering these bands "true metal", however, may be hiding some deeper misogynistic attitudes.

I mean I sort of get the argument for After Forever and Flyleaf (though the latter is definitely xcore enough, Christian metal rarely gets the same credit in mainstream circles because of the distance and rivalry between the industries), but I mean, come on! Tell those "metal elitists" "They're all a type of metal. Get your head your ass! You're just mad because your mom wouldn't buy you tickets to DragonCon until you found a job and moved out of the house!"

i don't think it's sexist to just prefer a certain sound to another. i do think these things CAN be influenced by sexism for some people (do you really dislike the sound or are you just associating it with something, etc), but on its own? nah.

I'm a male musician, and I don't find this sexist. It's all purely a matter of aesthetics, and there's nothing sexist about that. I'm sure you'd love a male-fronted metal band if the vocalist sang in the same style/register as female vocalists (if such a thing exists). Sexism is saying "male-fronted bands are, in general, inferior to female-fronted ones, and this is not just my opinion."

Or, well, the other way around.
