I feel like there has to be more background to this story.

I absolutely despise when people call me by my real name online. I don't keep it a secret, necessarily, but just because you know it doesn't mean you need to use it. It's like when you introduce yourself as 'Tommy' but they call you 'Thomas' instead-- if I wanted to be called 'Thomas', I'd call myself Thomas.

This reminds me of one of my friends whose name is Jessie. Not Jessica, Jessie. She goes by Jessie--not Jess, Jessie. People insist on thinking her name is really short for Jessica. This leads to some frustration on her part.

...In short, yeah, pretty much. The name you get is probably the name you're meant to use, thanks very much.

That's weird. I've told my (fairly uncommon) RL first name to people in fandom and no one's tried to use it instead of my usernames. Your friends sound like assholes if they won't call you what you want.

Ew. I'm not comfortable using my "legal name" online at all, one of the main reasons for that is my privacy. It's really weird and creepy that they are hassling you this much over it.

I share the same sentiments about privacy online. Just tell them how you're feeling, OP. If you're assertive enough about it and if they're friends worth keeping, they should stop. Just let them know it's important to you.

I find it odd that they were so hardcore about wanting to know your real name.

Just say "Quit using my real name, it pisses me off. If you're an actual friend you'll understand."

Yeah, my real name is pretty embarrassing (and, I sincerely hope for children everywhere, uncommon), so at some point I developed a rad Internet nickname that my girlfriend and a few other people call me by, though most still refer to me by an abbreviation of my username.

Anyway, pointless anecdote. Just tell them your actual name sucks and you'd dig the nickname more! If they don't get it, well, they're dicks. And/or cunts.

Is....is this Yahoo!RP/Japanese Anime chat? It's been a fad for a while to shout/use people's irl's names as they enter the rp chat....I mean, what happened to using your role play character name, even?

It happens if you are comfortable enough to tell your real name to /one/ person, and then suddenly *everyone* knows it and uses it. It's stupid and screams "LOOK AT ME".

What's even worse is that now that shit has gone over into rphaven.com due to the Yahoo rp'ers desiring more ooc attention and swarming there as well.

uuuh as far as i know, most people will back off if you say something along the lines of it's weird seeing my real name online, i like having people call me _____ or something like that. if you're not assuming they're mind-readers and have already given that a shot, then why don't you just tell them that it really bothers you? it's perfectly okay to get butthurt about your name. if after all that they want to call you by your real name still then lose the dick friends and find some new ones.

It sounds like your friends think your RL name is cool, that's why they want to use it so much. I get your fears about having it bite you in the ass, especially if it's unusual.

I think you should explain to your friends that you don't want your RL name connected with fandom stuff since it's googleable, that it's okay for them to use it in private messages, chatrooms and real life meet ups but not in posts where it can be searched by employers or enemies. The compromise might be enough to let them respect your wishes.

Fake name? That's what I've done. I've even met up with a few fandom friends under it.

I had the same thing with some friends on a forum; we added each other on Facebook, and they all started to use real names. It wasn't that hard, I just said that I preferred my username to my IRL name. I even asked them to erase references to my name in posts, which was probably a little much, but nobody seemed to mind. It became a joke to call me Redacted for a while, but that was fine :P

If I were you, I'd just post this secret in my journal and be like, "this was me!" But I'm silly like that. If not, just say exactly what you said in the secret.

It might help to give them a reason why you don't like your RL name... you don't think it suits you, or it brings up bad memories, or you know too many other people by that name, or whatever.

If that's not enough for them, they're not worth keeping as friends.

Well, it's understandable; that's part of what fandom's about, getting to be the 'version' of yourself that you want to be. Maybe say it in a lighthearted, semi-joking way...?

I've chosen a 'fandom name' for myself, and people always use that. Sure, they come up with nicknames and stuff, but the sole reason they do is because that absolutely none of my fandom friends know my real name. It's not so much that I fear mockery, I just prefer to keep my fandom life and my real life mutually exclusive.

1. Your friends are jerks.

2. Did you choose a really embarrassing fandom name that doesn't sound like a real name and that people are totally embarrassed to have to use? I hate it when people do that. I never know what to call them.

You shouldn't have caved in, but what's done is done, so let's move on: your friends are being extremely disrespectful to you, and their insistence gives me a creepy stalker vibe. Don't cave in this time, tell them to cut that shit out and don't bother whether they think that makes you look whiny. Their opinion lost any meaningful value in the moment they refused to respect your most basic wishes.
