Cheer up, OP. BNF's are usually overrated mediocre artists/authors, who, more often than not, get delusions of grandeur after awhile. You can't go comparing yourself to other people all the time -- that is the way that leads to insanity.

Besides, how can you "fail" at fandom? I'm certain your work is appreciated by some. Maybe you're not allowing yourself to see it?

(And remember, Korra's coming out soonish. I'm sure if you let go and allow yourself to have fun you'll be ready for when the new fandom springs up. Won't that be fun?)

I totally agree with this, a kabajillion percent plus one.

I always assumed it was because they had at least 1 or 2 fake accounts to rally support for them and secure "BNF" status

Also, I think it's about how loud you shout. Lots of quiet people are very underrated because they have such soft voices - they keep their corner of the fandom to themselves, and tend to have richer results in the end - whereas those with louder voices tend to churn out a myriad of things in mass amounts of lower quality in order to get the hits. It's double-edged, and not fair. I wish I had the answers for ya, OP.

I think with me, is I write really, really slowly so the fans I do have go off and do something else because they get sick of waiting, but I'm not about to churn out crap to be recognized, which is how I think I fail.

Well, perhaps that's where you and the BNF differ. You still have your integrity and keep your writing all for yourself, which is what it should be about, whereas said BNF flings so much out there and will probably end up drowning on it.

Lol, so you have to suffer for having a life? I can understand your frustration at that.

But then, maybe that's also a good point. You have a soft voice in the fandom, and your stuff is excellent - you just don't have time to waste whoring yourself out, you know?

I suspect that whatever you create has a fanbase - they could just have soft voices as well. If you're worried, maybe post what you have in places that you frequent the most, get your voice out there.

And besides, even a small handful of wonderful, truthful fans are far more valuable than a gaggle of empty-headed yesmen, you know?

I'd delurk, but I'd be afraid that you would take the secret the wrong way.

And yes, I'd rather have a select few reading my stuff, but I just want to be recced. Is it that hard?

I understand. It's like people who are always reading with commenting - phantom fans - and you wonder why they won't say anything.

The thing with recs, I think (lol I dunno), is that they're all so personal. Everyone likes different things, and they'll recommend different fics. But then, less people can recommend things if they don't know about them.

I think what makes a popular fic - and author - is confidence. If an author is proud of a fic, they want to flaunt it and show it off. You sound really shy to me, and it sounds like your shyness makes it hard for you to share loudly. There's nothing wrong with that - unless you want to be recommended tons of times.

Bite that shyness and be proud of what you create, and get out there! You can do it! =3

Hm...Then perhaps just keep exposing people to your work and they're bound to enjoy it. Persistence usually works, too.

ATLA fandom is also kind of fickle. They like weird things. The crackier (and non-canon), the better =3

Yeah, I don't ship (or write) a lot of non-canon.

Hm...Then probably the best course of action would be to pimp the hell out of the fics you are most proud of. Usually when you do, and it's well-received, the other fics you have will be looked at, too.

If you're writing Mai/Zuko, I'd love to read it. I'm new to the fandom so I don't really know who the BNFs are or anything.

Uhhh, I guess you should just keep writing stuff as you are, because it sounds like you're writing very good stuff, just unable to mass produce. Which isn't a bad thing. Slow and steady wins the race, as they say.

I've written one thing that's Mai/Zuko, and it's a lemon.

Lemon's okay with me! I wrote something about Zuko whackin' it recently, so I'd bbe a hypocrite to mind sex, haha.

What else do you write? Do you write for any other fandoms, or just A:TLA?
