This is exactly my problem with it. My friends could accept it because they don't know how blood typing works. You're pretty close, but to clarify for other people in the thread: Human blood contains antigens, which are attached to red blood cells, and antibodies, which are not. Three types of antigens and antibodies exist: A, B, and Rh (the kind that determines positive or negative). The antigens present determine the blood type, while the antibodies determine what a person can't receive without a dangerous reaction (e.g. a person with A and Rh antigens, or A+ blood, will have B antibodies). Saying, "But maybe Sookie has no antigens!" doesn't fly, because that's O-. Maybe if she had no antibodies, either, but I probably wouldn't buy that.

So even if Sookie has magic fairy blood, she should be testing as something, even if they have to make up a name for whatever they observe in her blood. They could have said, "You have some weird blood we've never seen before," "We don't understand your test results and aren't equipped to study them further," anything. I would have accepted literally any other explanation.

Now, if she'd tested as O- and then somehow showed a reaction similar to what someone in her case would have to A, showing that she somehow had O antibodies which is unheard of in the scientific community and therefore very interesting, that would make for an interesting plot twist.

It would probably also kill Sookie, which would also make for an interesting plot twist. :D

...Actually, if she turned out to have O antibodies, that would be fucking hilarious and would probably convince me to just ignore the issue altogether. Good thinking.

You're mostly right with your reasoning, but there is an explanation (exception?) out there in the real world.

See, I've read the books and figured it was fairy shit but when this scene came up I immediately went "OMG the Bombay phenotype!" If she did have the Bombay phenotype she'd type as O in an antigen test regardless of what ABO type she was because the oligo the ABO antigen attaches to (H antigen) is missing. She wouldn't really be O because O type blood has H antigen and therefore, the only blood that could be used for transfusion is more Bombay blood with no H, which is ultra rare and would explain why she reacted to O neg. ...Science! It's rad!

Still, that scene was LAME and I was hoping Jason could save her.

....aaaaand already discussed. Fail.

Also, thanks to you, I just had a half hour long twitter conversation about this with my friends. It's fun applying logical science to fantasy!

Re: OP

Don't watch the show so i don't know how they determined she has no blood type, but weird out-of-system types do exist. For example, Bombay blood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hh_antigen_system). If i'm remembering correctly though, a lot of these rare types give false-positives for something in the ABO system - Bombay blood will show up on tests as O type, so that still doesn't really explain this character.

I saw them announce it during the "Previously on" thing, so I didn't find out either how they tested her. And yeah, the example you give is an instance of having an unusual blood type that is difficult to test for, not lacking a blood type altogether (although based on the graph in the article you linked, it's probably the closest to it that can be seen IRL or imagined).

Thanks for the link, by the way, this is really interesting.

That would have worked for this episode if they did standard US hospital tests - she would have tested as O- which they then gave her, but she reacted to it. Obviously not the same as "no blood type" though!
