I've never seen a summary for a RPF that says that 2 actors had coffee, picked up their dry cleaning and then didn't cheat on their real life partners.

wow, you don't get around fandom much, do you? there are plenty of rpf stories that are platonic in nature.

and they are STORIES. FICTION. they are not being presented as factual, at all.

rpf writers use portrayed personalities. there is no way we could actually know an actor/musician/etc. real personality.

and yet when newspapers or magazines do it it's libel. When children, and sadly, some adults, do it, is's teasing and bullying. When governments or corporations do it it's propaganda.

saying, oh well it's fiction doesn't give you a free pass.

Besides, as I've stated (twice now), to each his or her own.

Why are you so upset over my decision to avoid RPF and my personal opinion that's distasteful? I'm not saying stop, I'm saying I want nothing to do with it.

Gotta agree with the anon, there ARE plenty of RPF fics that are somewhat more respectful in nature (e.g. there's platonic fics, there are fics which are just AU in the sense that no partner is being cheated on - they just don't exist/never met/whatever).

And RPF honestly doesn't meet the standard for libel - which is a pretty high standard. If people can tell it's not true, it can't be libel.


That being said, I think you have every right to personally be uncomfortable with it. I find fics where people cheat deeply uncomfortable, and I have NO idea what motivates people to write things like rape about real people.

my comment about libel was more against using 'well, its just a story' as an excuse for certain behaviours, than as an arguement against actual RPF.

It just feels (to me, at least) like the same cop out as saying 'well, it's just a joke' after offending someone.

I don't go out of my way to read RPF, or their summaries. There may be some platonic ones, but the vast majority I've come across are all at best romantic, and at worst PWP.
