I find it really difficult to tell when you're 'doing it right' even for yourself. The best thing to try to do, which I have to say doesn't always succeed, is to do what you like and seek out the people who are also doing that. But it's tricky—it's so easy online to feel like you are over here doing one thing, and everyone else is over there having fun, even if the thing they're doing wouldn't be fun for you.

It's hardly just fandom costumes that screw over women that way. Clothes (and various services) are almost always more expensive, more needlessly sexualized, and have less in the package than men's stuff.
