If you're poor, working all the time, and living in an area not affected by sky-high tobacco taxes, cigarettes can end up one of your few luxury options. I lived in Missouri when I still smoked, and a lot of working class became smokers because that was the only guarantee of getting breaks while you were on the clock.

That's exactly what I meant. Thank you :).

My mom smokes and I'm pretty damn poor. I've known a lot of people in my situation who smoke as well. And a lot who don't too.

I don't know, call me sensitive, but I don't like somebody giving the character an addiction based on something like if they're poor. :/

I was wondering about this, but then, I live in Britain, which taxes to the hilt for cigarettes. One pack is like. $10? Not exactly a poor people thing.

Over here in the USA, our cigarettes have risen a lot in price (at least in my state?) and being poor hasn't seemed to stop all the people who can't afford it. Unfortunately.

I hate smoking in real life and in fiction when a nice character (one I want to be a friend with and I'd like to hang out with) does it, but when it is a cruel, manipulative asshole, I don't mind it. I think it is cool when the character smokes after killing/torturing/raping somebody, but I hate it when a likeable character does it.

Because of this, in real life I don't trust smokers as much as I do people who don't smoke. I know that many people who smoke are lovely, but they endanger not only their own health and life, but also their friends', partners', children's etc. health and lives too. Which is a really bad thing to do. :/

This is exactly me. Like, to the letter. It's largely irrational but I always feel betrayed if I find out someone I liked/was friends with smokes. This is ridiculous to the point that I actually have nightmares about my family starting.

I dislike smoking irl when it's not done politely, but in fiction, I find it so fucking hot, idek.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same way. I don't like being around smoke irl, but, ugh, I love it in fiction. A lot of my favorite characters are smokers.

I think that in real life, when people smoke it makes them look like complete dumbasses. I don't hate smokers, but when I see someone light up I just sorta roll my eyes and think "Oh God no. What an idiot." Yeah, enjoy your lung cancer.

But when I see fictional people smoke, I think it is completely sexy and badass.

Because in fiction you get the "cool" image without that godawful smell and actual health detriments?

Strangely enough, I don't actually mind the smell of cigarette smoke.

I just think smoking is stupid.

Me too. And I'm pretty sure I can trace it back to when I first started watching Mad Men.

This secret made me go out and buy a pack of cigarettes and I quite smoking five months ago. Now I feel evil and poor.
