idk why you would think that, though. It was just a clever way of squeezing money out of people. Kinda like 3D movies. But that's another story, entirely.

I think you can actually use USB sticks in most consoles these days... right?

the only reason they made them was so YOU COULD PLAY YOUR SAVE FILE AT A FRIENDS' HOUSE OMG

idk i guess it's an okay idea?

[identity profile] 9goodfingers.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate that they don't make them anymore. 8'C I loved being able to take my games/files to a friend's place and play with them instead of starting stuff over every time. The coolest thing ever was when we played FF9 in ~*two player mode*~ omg.

When my Wii had to be replaced with a new one, I found myself cursing the fact that we didn't have a memory card. We have four for the Gamecube, one for everyone in my family.

Memory cards are just damn USEFUL.

[identity profile] bruised-skin.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved memory cards, now I'm terrified that I'll run out of room on my PS3. (I save most of my files. Even after I've beaten the game)

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked being able to just take the game and memory card when I went to visit my brother, since he had a PS2. Rather than hauling my whole system around.

[identity profile] kay-obsessive.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I had a surge of appreciation for them after bringing Smash Brothers Brawl across the country to play with my friends and suddenly realizing none of the characters were unlocked. =P

That being said, I hate playing a playstation/gamecube/whatever game I haven't played in ages and having to switch through fifteen cards before I find the one with the right save file.

[identity profile] sir-stache.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, i hate that they're not around anymore. i miss being able to take my saves over to my friend's houses. plus, what if the system crashes? what if more than one person uses the system? it's just so handy to have those cards around. my little 8mb card has lasted me nearly 10 years and counting (i keep it tidy).

there are usb sticks for the 360, though, but they're a little pricey; cheapest one is like, $40. for the wii, don't you have to mod it to transfer saves or something? i don't know of an official way.

Me too anon :(

[identity profile] masked-creator.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I love memory cards. I wish they were optional for the PS3 and Wii. :(

I miss 'em too. I'm just waiting for the fireworks that will ensue when my sister-in-law leaves home with the family console that is technically hers, taking all her brother's save files with her. I've heard USB backups can get kind of iffy. And when I move? If Snake's not unlocked on whatever Wii is where I'm going, it's Shadow Moses marathon time.

[identity profile] hezul.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I immensely prefer memory cards to this built-in hard drive bullshit. You're not alone, OP.

[identity profile] gabzillaz.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved them.

[identity profile] rachelled.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I had this exact same conversation with someone this weekend. Myself, I think the 360's hard drive compromise is nice, because I can take the hard drive and attach it to friends' consoles if I want :) It's like a big memory card, but 23434x bigger although DLC is an issue rofl

Yeah, I loved being able to take my game files to a friends house, and I loved it when they could bring theirs over too without lugging around a huge/expensive system.

[identity profile] marsdragon.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
...huh? They were needed for awhile in there when CD media was in but it wasn't really cost effective to put memory right in the game console. I think the Saturn did the 'memory in the game console' thing and oh hey one of the problems with Saturns is that the memory ran out of batteries and you can't save any more. And I think even then you needed a cartridge with more memory to add on. (Not sure about this, while we had a Saturn the batteries had run out and we never had a cartridge)

I guess I just don't understand having an opinion on them one way or another. Cartridges have some advantages in terms of loading speed, but that's not the memory card's fault. Hard drives have other advantages and disadvantages. It's just what happens to be technically feasible and cost-effective to save your games when the console was made.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
What? Man, I loved them so much. It was so nice to not have to bring the whole system to a friend's house.

Sure you can use USB flash drives to move content now, but back when the PS2 came out that hadn't been an option. I thought it was a revolutionary idea. It's just that times have changed.

[identity profile] wicked-seraph.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I have yet to meet someone who didn't think they were a good idea. I don't own anything besides a PS2, but I can't imagine how frustrating it would be to want to play your file at a friend's house and realise that oh shit, there's no way for you to take it there.

I didn't think it was THAT inconvenient to just leave your memory card in the console and switch as needed *shrug*

[identity profile] quew.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I may not understand much about gaming systems, but I loved my two memory cards, with all their FFX & XII, Tomb Raider, RE 1 & 2 & Nemesis and Veronica and various other game data. Who wouldn't think that was a good idea?

[identity profile] ishosophy.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Psycho Mantis? What are you doing here, I killed you in Alaska, you skeletal bitch.

I loooved taking my memory cards to my friends/boyfriends house. There were always those few bosses that no matter I did I couldn't seem to beat them.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/___teckie/ 2010-08-25 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
If you're talking about the ps3, you do know that you can transfer your save games to usb right?
http://www.techradar.com/blogs/article/10-ps3-tricks-sony-doesn-t-tell-you-129626

But if not... Are ps2 mem cards already being phased out? I know that ps1 mem cards are rare finds but ps2 mem cards?

[identity profile] jade-lightning.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I do like memory cards, they're so cheap and easy.
