Well, have you ever read or saw any Giger interview? The Alien is supposed to look "sexy" and make you question your sexuality. It's a thread to women and men, impregnating them both and orally. The facehugger looks like a vag, the Alien's inner mouth and head look phallic.

Giger even did a series of pornographic images depicting the Alien having sex with humans or females that look a lot like his other alien creation Sil (from Species).
A lot of Giger's works are sexually disturbing.

Scott even wanted a scene with Ellen Ripley and the Alien observing her half naked body in a very... suggestive way. But it never made it into the final movie. It's always good to watch the audio commentaries! *g*

I kinda hate what the film industry has done to the disturbing, androgynous Alien. They changed his appearance to make it look more like a monster/dragon. The new movies show nothing of Alien's scary, sexy ways. It's just about guts and gore now.

Like someone said above, they are supposed to be sexual on a psychosomatic level. It's not obvious at first by their design, but the face huggers and the head design do represent human genitalia, and from what I've been told by a psychology teacher, the fact that they are androgynous and humanoid makes them somewhat appealing on a terrifying level- not to mention their spines/ribs are similar to that of a human's, making them look even more so like a human without the viewer coming to that conclusion.

in other words, they were designed to be sexy, but you can't figure out if you are or not, and you're terrified by the prospects of what you could be feeling. <3
