No way, anon. Whatever flaws Cassie Claire might have, she can at least plot and do semi-convincing characters.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes her writing is bad, but I read all those books because her characters are at least amusing. I couldn't even make it though the first Twilight because of that.

It sounds like you don't know why so many people are pissed at her or she has the reputation she does.

Maybe you should look it up. Not saying you should hate the books or her after but it might explain a few things.

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Excuse my ignorance, was she the one who copied whole passages almost verbatim out of books and used them in her fanfiction?

Yeah, really. I've never read any of her stuff, but I know about the whole plagiarism scandal and it's pretty easy to see why people were/are pissed off at her.

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the first one out of curiosity. It wasn't my bag, but I can see why someone might like it. Decent plot and characters. Fun enough, though nothing deep or very original. Her prose tends towards the purple, but whatever, a flowery sentence here and there is okay, and her writing is occasionally pretty clever. All in all, I give it a pass. Despite the fact that Stephanie Meyer endorses it, it's just nowhere near as ridiculously vapid as Twilight.

And the plagiarism thing back in the Draco trilogy days.... that wasn't cool, but if her fic didn't get to be such a big deal within the HP fandom, chances are no one would have ever noticed. And it's not like she reaped any financial benefit (at least directly) from that. I dunno, I'm willing to forgive and forget, or just really, actually, not care.

Haha my first reaction was "OMG giant palmetto bugs!" then had to do a double take.

Yeah, it's super weird the way the internet hates on plagiarists.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
The internet hates her because she's an entitled fanbrat plagiarist with a hugely inflated sense of her own importance, and because someone like that actually got published. So part of it is probably jealousy, but certainly not most of it. Because I've been published, and I still hate her.

plagiarism, buy-a-bnf-an-ipod, "i subconsciously collect quotes and don't know where they're from!", etc

I felt kinda "obligated" to check out her stuff, since it's urban fantasy and Holly Black endorsed her, but I just couldn't get into the books.

The plagiarism thing is disappointing too -- anyone know if any of that carried into her books?

(posted anon because people get reaaaally defensive whenever anyone questions the author -- they seem to be more viscous than the haters)

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I actually enjoyed the books until I realized how much of a self-insert the main character was.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Cassie Claire is a far superior writer than JK Rowling.

My dislike of her goes beyond the plagiarism, which is so yesterdaaaaay, but springs from her incredibly poor writing skills.

[identity profile] snowweisz.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
The internet hates her because she plagiarized. Because her novel is a rip off of her fanfic. And because the only good parts of her fanfic were the plagiarized ones.
And that's the short version. The long one's been linked already.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Off to read the links provided re this plagiarism business now. Otherwise, I don't know much about this writer. Very possibly, if I'm remembering the right book, I may have read the first part of this one. It didn't hold my interest, but it's no Twilight. Twilight is a special kind of vapid. Few things are as devoid of substance as Twilight.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I got given that trilogy for Christmas. I didn't love it, didn't hate it. It was a popcorn book really- I mostly forgot about it as soon as I was done reading.

However, I think Cassandra Claire is a great testament to how doing stupid stuff on the internet can come back to bite you in the ass; but considering the amount of people who do stupid stuff on the internet I think it's time everyone moved on and forgot about her.
(Even if Clary-sue is a transparent self-insert.)

Nothing is a vapid as Twilight.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...did you seriously just put Tolkien and Rowling on the same playing field?

Howls of derisive laughter, Bruce.

Fandom is notoriously unforgiving and can hold grudges forever. She could rescue a litter of puppies from a burning building and everyone would be like "Oh yeah, I know her. She wrote plagiarized Harry Potter fanfiction."

I'm not saying that she should be forgiven for what she did. Just that the internet never forgets. And if you're going to publish legitimate novels after an incident like that, you might want to consider using a pseudonym that can't be traced back to stories about Draco Malfoy in leather pants.
