I just sort of assumed he really did care about Harry after all--not at first, obviously, but towards the end. I mean, yeah, he was still lusting after his dead mother, but I think he came to reluctantly sort of care about Harry as an individual too.

This is what I was thinking as well. When I read the whole secret I was really confused because what they got from it wasn't what I got from it at all.

I don't get why people hate him so completely. I mean he's an asshole, but he's complex. It's not like we have to put up with him irl. He's just a great character, and I love how JKR developed him. And I will totally challenge anybody here who keeps saying how he only cares about Harry because of Lily, and how that's lame. Seriously, what's LESS lame than love? Nothing!
