Wow.
I don't know what makes me more angry here -- the implication that people in the United States do not care about or understand soccer football (WTF it's the only sport I watch) or that apparently Britons were the only Europeans to colonize the North American continent (I'm referring to the "bastardization of British culture" comment -- cause obviously Great Britain was the only European country to have any lasting cultural effect on our society, culture and language)

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Most definitely not the OP, but for the sake of argument, being a former British colony is a very big part of what ties these three countries together. Of course other cultures had a part in the making of America, and Canada and Australia for that matter, (I certainly wouldn't have been here if it wasn't so). Also, soccer fucking rocks! Unfortunately America has really got onto it too much yet.

Well yeah, having a common language and similar systems of government helps, I guess. I still don't think any of these countries are necessarily a "bastardization of British culture"

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope, these countries are all their own country. I hate the idea that America doesn't have a culture because anyone who has spent any time in the States knows there is one. Actually you don't have to you can see it on tv, but anyway America, Canada, and Australia have a culture very much separate from the British one.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
America doesn't have a culture. It's got a half-dozen at least. -_-

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
...So you agree with the OP then?

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Mainly I was just astonished that anyone would assume that the United States, Canada and Australia were just "watered down bastardization[s] of British culture" in the first place. So the fact that OP even thought that to begin with bothers me.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Err, but Britain did have the strongest cultural impact on the United States, and we still have very strong cultural ties with them. Saying the US is some sort of bastardized GB makes way more sense than saying we're like... a bastardized France, or Spain. Nobody's arguing that other countries didn't have an impact on the US culture, but GB obviously had the most lasting impact.

And getting pissed off at the general statement that Americans don't care about soccer is also fucking stupid, because most Americans don't care about soccer. The fact that you are a special snowflake doesn't change the fact that, generally speaking, soccer is not a big deal here.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
In general people in the United States don't care about soccer!football. Some people here do, sure, myself included as well as you, but it's not common. How many Americans lose their shit over the Super Bowl? A lot. How many Americans lose their shit over the World Cup? Not near as many. And it can't be denied that Great Britain had a heavy influence on the countries in questions' respective cultures. As for why someone would think their cultures are a "watered down bastardization of British culture", this is actually a relatively common sentiment. I have seen people say "There's no such thing as American culture. We just stole things from Great Britain and miscellaneous other places" pretty often. It's misguided, but it does exist.

So I'm not really sure why you're trying to start something over harmless, relatively common sentiments. OP used to feel like America, Canada, and Australia weren't unique and were carbon copies of British culture, but Hetalia convinced them otherwise, and they made a joke about said nations' general disinterest in soccer. What is there to be upset about here?
