Your countries were not colonised. They were created as a result of colonisation.

Unless you are a member of the Native Peoples. If so, ignore this.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Good point, but I don't think that is what the OP meant. I think they meant that those three mentioned cultures have a lot of blood on their hands because of the countries that set them up. At least, that is how I read it.

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
This secret made me smile. You make me happy, anon.

[identity profile] jestergundam.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Whoops, meant to respond to the secret thread.
MY BAD.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
Most people in my country are a mix of Native and English/German/French/African/WTFever heritage (myself included). Our Native ancestors either married into families of, or changed their names to "fit in" with, the dominating white English-speaking society or were forced onto reservations.

Your countries were not colonised. They were created as a result of colonisation.

*scratches head*

Er... what? Did you... intentionally contradict yourself or am I misreading you? You do know that there were people here before Daddy White Man stuck his dick all up in it, right? I mean, if Europe didn't colonise it, I wouldn't be here (at least, not as I am today), but knowing the traditions and family histories that have been eradicated because of it... sometimes I just don't know what to think. What were my Native ancestors' names before they changed them to Smith and Jones? Hell, I could be some badass chief's great-great-great-great-grand-whatever and never fucking know. And it wasn't just Natives that had their traditions ripped from them. The African slaves did, too.

...I can't remember where I was going with this. :|a But you get the idea, yeah? Creation of colonies = colonisation.

I hear that. Let England have it.

REAL COUNTRIES DO IT ON ICE.

[identity profile] bloodrivendream.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Let us unite in our collective indifference to spherical footballs!
- I love that line.

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The first half makes me like you. You sound like a reasonable person.

The very last part is hilarious. Because it's mostly true.

[identity profile] sliefoxx.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I like this secret and I like you.
ext_81845: the character ray person from generation kill, squinting and smiling/smirking (yeah... no.)

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow.
I don't know what makes me more angry here -- the implication that people in the United States do not care about or understand soccer football (WTF it's the only sport I watch) or that apparently Britons were the only Europeans to colonize the North American continent (I'm referring to the "bastardization of British culture" comment -- cause obviously Great Britain was the only European country to have any lasting cultural effect on our society, culture and language)

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Most definitely not the OP, but for the sake of argument, being a former British colony is a very big part of what ties these three countries together. Of course other cultures had a part in the making of America, and Canada and Australia for that matter, (I certainly wouldn't have been here if it wasn't so). Also, soccer fucking rocks! Unfortunately America has really got onto it too much yet.

Err, but Britain did have the strongest cultural impact on the United States, and we still have very strong cultural ties with them. Saying the US is some sort of bastardized GB makes way more sense than saying we're like... a bastardized France, or Spain. Nobody's arguing that other countries didn't have an impact on the US culture, but GB obviously had the most lasting impact.

And getting pissed off at the general statement that Americans don't care about soccer is also fucking stupid, because most Americans don't care about soccer. The fact that you are a special snowflake doesn't change the fact that, generally speaking, soccer is not a big deal here.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
In general people in the United States don't care about soccer!football. Some people here do, sure, myself included as well as you, but it's not common. How many Americans lose their shit over the Super Bowl? A lot. How many Americans lose their shit over the World Cup? Not near as many. And it can't be denied that Great Britain had a heavy influence on the countries in questions' respective cultures. As for why someone would think their cultures are a "watered down bastardization of British culture", this is actually a relatively common sentiment. I have seen people say "There's no such thing as American culture. We just stole things from Great Britain and miscellaneous other places" pretty often. It's misguided, but it does exist.

So I'm not really sure why you're trying to start something over harmless, relatively common sentiments. OP used to feel like America, Canada, and Australia weren't unique and were carbon copies of British culture, but Hetalia convinced them otherwise, and they made a joke about said nations' general disinterest in soccer. What is there to be upset about here?

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
GENERALIZATIONS ARE MADE ALL THE TIME! FOR INSTANCE, I COULD SAY THAT FANDOMSECRET IS FULL OF PEOPLE WHO SHOULD TAKE A STEP BACK AND CZECH THEMSELVES BEFORE THEY WRECK THEMSELVES IN THE COMMENTS.

IS EVERYONE THIS WAY? NO. DOES EVERYONE IN THE US HATE FOOTBALL/SOCCER/WHATTHEFUCKEVER? NO.

Honestly I think America would be more interested in soccer if it were strongly associated with tasty snacks the way football is.

Or at least, I would.

I don't actually give a shit about football, but I always look forward to football season for the dips. The delicious, delicious dips.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I like baseball. Baseball = tasty snacks, like ice cream and hotdogs.

Also, fit guys running around...but that's neither here nor there.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-24 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
those three things have the exact same face and I did not even notice they were meant to be three different characters? oh my god

also football is amazing
It's one of those great sports where it's totally okay for attractive men to kiss each other when they score a goal

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least two of them were supposed to have the same face being twins and all.

[identity profile] beforeglamour.livejournal.com 2010-08-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I like you OP. And I like America. And Australia, from what I know about it. And Canada is a wonderful culture that is delightful to mock and see people not get it and get pissy on fandom secrets. In America.

[identity profile] inkedfeathers.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
That icon is absolutely hilarious.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I like these three. They need to hang out more.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I like you, OP. And the football line made me chuckle. As did the couple butthurt "bawww I like football as in soccer!" comments. This is atypical of these countries (or at least America, I'd assume so for Canada and Australia too given what I heard of Australia during the World Cup and that Canada wasn't in it, but I could be wrong).
