I like you, OP. And the football line made me chuckle. As did the couple butthurt "bawww I like football as in soccer!" comments. This is atypical of these countries (or at least America, I'd assume so for Canada and Australia too given what I heard of Australia during the World Cup and that Canada wasn't in it, but I could be wrong).

[identity profile] rainejoybringer.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Aussies love their football, no matter what kind of ball it is, or what crazy rules are behind it. Considering we invented AFL, I'm surprised our country is as sane as it is. :D

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Aaah, thanks for the insight! Of the three countries mentioned I figured Australia would be the one that likes football the most, but I wasn't sure to what extent. Thanks for the correction.

[identity profile] rainejoybringer.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
The only reason we ever don't like European football is when we get kicked out of the World Cup. For some reason we always get referees that make terrible, terrible calls. We're still suspicious the federation is trying to influence the outcomes.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a shame D: Hopefully you guys will kick some ass in 2014! I'll cheer for you as much as I can~ This year made that a bit difficult because my loyalties lie with Germany, but Australia is a pretty cool place with a good team (from what I saw) and having to be suspicious like that has to be annoying.

It's not that people don't watch it that bothers me (who care about that), it's the outright mockery (and sometimes, hatred) of the sport in the United States that pisses me off, as if there is something intrinsically un-American about soccer

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-08-25 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh yeah that shit pisses me off, too. It's silly and I don't get it. I don't think that's the deal with this OP, though. I think they were just joking since America is infamous for not liking soccer, which certainly sets it apart from Great Britain.

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
But that's obviously not what the OP was doing. Their exact words were, "selective indifference," which are hardly harsh or mocking. You were just looking for a reason to be offended.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't hate soccer. I just happen to like a lot of other sports significantly more. I'm not saying I could never like it because I'm sure it's a really nice game and all, but it just... I don't know. Feels like there's something missing, at least where I'm from. Our kind of football, baseball, basketball, hockey... something about those sports just seems bigger and more exiting to me. But that's just me.

And I think the reason some people might think of soccer as being "un-American" is because it's a game that's not as popular in the US, as opposed to most of the rest of the world. I'm not saying they're right, but that could be why.

It's bigger because your wimpy men all wear a sofa strapped to them to play rugby, and body armour to play rounders.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-08-25 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I wasn't talking about the guys themselves. I meant the actual sporting event.

Also, lol rugby. My university actually has an intramural rugby team, and it is not the same. Nice try, though! With a little more practice, even you could one day be a successful internet troll~

Do you think the Superbowl is even in the same league as the World Cup? Lol, idiot

Dude what's with the hate?

OP

Wanting to feel superior to a person whose face they'll never see and whose name they'll never know? IDK, people get butthurt over the silliest things.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-08-26 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
In my country. Lol, idiot.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you seen America during the Superbowl? Have you seen America during the World Cup? Big difference there. If we're talking about popularity in individual countries (which we are), the Superbowl (regrettably) blows the World Cup out of the water in America. Obviously the World Cup is on a much bigger scale of worldwide importance than the Superbowl since it's an international event and worldwide soccer is much more popular than American football, but OP was talking about within America

I have no interest whatsoever in American football and I love soccer, the only other sports I'm willing to watch are tennis, hockey, and pretty much anything in the Olympics, but I can't deny that in general Americans don't give a fuck about soccer and lose their shit over American football. No need to start petty fights over facts.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Hockey has only recently taken over soccer as the most popular sport in Canada.

...Yeah.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2010-08-26 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I'll remember that. Sorry about that! I don't really pay much attention to sports period and I guess it shows. "Soccer is boring" must just be a general American thing, then.
