I always thought it was less about hating Harry and more about having to look at Harry everyday and think, "That should have been my son. That could have been my son, if I hadn't been such a fool."

I never thought he really hated Harry. It seemed to me like he kept Harry at a distance because he wanted to keep his hate for Harry's father alive, and he knew that he couldn't do that if he got close to Harry and realized the boy was everything he loved about Lily. It was easier for him to see Harry as James' son than Lily's son.

He... emotionally abused Harry, humiliated him extensively, and tried to get him expelled from school at every turn. I don't think that's just "keeping him at a distance."

Severus Snape was a true creepy douchebag and his fans skeeve me out a little bit.

Pfft, gurl, Snape didn't emotionally abuse Harry, he acted like a jealous twelve year old. Yes, he tried to get him expelled over and over, but I would definitely argue against the "humiliated him extensively" claim. Most of what you see between Harry and Snape is them glaring moodily at each other and being rude and snarky at each other. Hell, Malfoy said worse things to Harry than Snape did. I'm in no way a Snape fan, but I certainly don't hate him, either.

I get what you're saying above regarding Snape thinking that Harry should've been his son instead, and I agree that he transferred his hate from James to Harry and wanted to keep things that way especially in the beginning, but like anon said, Snape was awful to Harry from the get-go, and not just distant with him. He wanted to poison Harry in Book 4 and seemed disappointed when Harry was called away for the weighing of the wands. He took his sweet time going over to help Harry after telling Draco to do the snake-conjuring spell during the Dueling Club. He called on Harry to answer questions in class on the first day and then belittled him for not knowing the answers, which he then continued to do for the next six years whenever he could tell that Harry wasn't getting the hang of things. He was a jerk - at 'best' - to Harry and all the other students who weren't in Slytherin.

And I say all that as someone who doesn't really hate Snape - well, not as much as I used to. In retrospect, I appreciate the layers that Rowling gave him... But I still think he was a horrible, abusive teacher, especially to Harry, who didn't start hating him until after Snape made the first few jabs in Book 1. And I think poor Neville got the worst treatment out of everyone in Potions class; no wonder he was always such a wreck.

I definitely agree about Snape being a horrible teacher. After seeing how horrible he was to a good chunk of his students, especially to poor Neville, I couldn't bring myself to care about how sad he was that the girl he liked didn't like him back, and that's why he did everything he did. Yes, James and his friends were mean to him, but they grew out of that, and I, personally, don't think Snape really grew out of that mentality completely.

Yeah, the whole one-sided Snape/Lily thing made me understand him better, but I didn't empathize with him, especially since he'd called Lily a Mudblood. Yeah, he felt bad about it, yeah, he wanted to apologize for it, but he still wouldn't listen to her about the Death Eaters, so to me, young!Snape seemed really oblivious to how much he was fucking up, and then her rejection of him made him even more bitter, and I think he blamed his falling out with Lily on James.

I personally don't think Sirius ever grew out of being mean to Snape, but I do think James changed for the better - even though we never got to see his growth - and in my personal canon, Lily was much of the cause for that. But yeah, Snape's grudge was a large part of his characterization, and again, though I liked that he wasn't evil nor completely altruistic, his juvenile attitude shouldn't be given a free pass just because it turned out he was in loooove.

(Also I meant to say 'five' years instead of six before)
