I have a great many problems with how Snape's arc ended, but that is the least among them. People do things for all sorts of reasons, and most of the time, the big, noble heroes are just as selfish (in different ways) as the people who are just in it for themselves or their own reasons. In fact, I prefer Snape's honesty about it. I'm guessing he wasn't too concerned about not having a friend in Harry, anyway. Snape was still a hero, even if he wasn't a "good guy," even if he didn't like Harry. I always thought that was the point - you don't have to be a nice person or Harry's #1 fan to still be a decent human being. Heck, I didn't like Harry either.

I hated the epilogue like I have never hated anything (in a book series) ever before. The names of the kids made me roll on the floor in derisive laughter. But again, naming his kid after Snape? IMO, he did it as a way to honor Snape's actions. Who cares if Snape didn't like him? I would wager Harry didn't even care about that. I'm sure there are a lot of kids named for people who didn't like or even know their parents.

Snape = not a decent human being. A good spy? Yeah. Decent human being? Not so much.

Depends on your definition, which is my point. Not all mean, selfish, jealous or petty people are necessarily evil. For that matter, not all evil people are as painfully obvious about it as the Death Eaters. Snape is a shade of gray. That's what makes him complex, that's what makes him interesting as a character. At the end of the day, I consider him a decent human being, perhaps because of some of the pragmatic decisions he had to make. I don't need people to be shiny and happy and perfect for me to consider them fundamentally on the side of good.

Plus, Harry named his kid after Snape eight years after Snape died. The "hero" Snape had probably become more important to him then than the asshole teacher Snape was.
