I didn't believe a word of that memory Snape gave Harry.

Well, I do believe that he cared for Lily quite a bit, and that James was indeed a toerag, but that's all. He went to Dumbledore so that he could protect Lily specifically - but never once did he mention her husband and son. Ironic, considering Harry was really the one at risk, not his parents, who were only at risk by association. He pre-emptively hated Harry before even meeting him, and refused to even try. He let his hatred get in the way of Dumbledore's attempts to help him, such as the infamous meltdown during Occlumency lessons. Never once did he even TRY to just go along with anything Dumbledore told him - he had to be an eternal pessimist and try to impede progress. He never had the same kind of trust in Dumbledore that he had had in him.

I don't believe he ever fully "was" Dumbledore's, and that he was a double agent through and through. Actually, I'm more inclined to believe he was a Death Eater pretending to be good. I mean, made an Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa (though he confessed to Dumbledore, who was later murdered), he ran back to the Death Eaters, he fed them information putting Harry at further risk, and was even part of the battalion on the night Harry turned 17.

Look at his last moments in life: he's in this hole with Voldemort, begging him to let him go fetch Harry. And to what end? Even if he double-crossed Voldemort by bringing Harry then saving him, he wouldn't have lived to tell the tale. You just don't do that with Voldemort. Although Voldemort never accused or thought of him as disloyal, Snape still got killed. If he had failed to kill Dumbledore, at least he would have died valiantly (through the Unbreakable Curse), because then Harry still would have had Dumbledore's protection, and, in this way, it would have really proved to Harry (and everyone, really) that Snape "was Dumbledore's".

Seriously, I've never headdesked harder. Then comes along little Albus Severus, named after two very brave men. Um, no. Snape was a coward. He hated being called coward because it is the one perfect word to describe him. He never had the courage to admit his feelings to Lily. He never stopped consider the repercussions of joining the Death Eaters, and that taking shelter in their promises of power that he would command respect. He never stood up to Voldemort and said "don't attack the Potters". He made that Unbreakable Vow to save face in front of Bellatrix and Narcissa. He murdered Dumbledore because of that stupid Vow, when he could have refused it or broken it. His patronus never took a shape that really personified Snape - it was the essence of Lily. His final minutes in life saw him trying to save his own skin at the expense of Harry's - begging him to be allowed to fetch Harry, so that he in turn could scarper, or again bask in the so-called glory of the Death Eaters, still counting him as a coward for sending The Boy Who Lived to his death.

There's just nothing else for it. Severus Snape was a coward.

Wow. It's shocking how far over your head the point flew.

It is really impressive how little you understood of Snape's story and his character.

Please go re-read the last few books.

"I didn't believe a word of that memory Snape gave Harry."

And that is where lies the problem.

No, Severus only went to Dumbledore because he knew one day he will fall in love with Harry and he needed him alive. And in the end, he didn't really die, it was all a ruse so he and Harry could escape to Hawaii together and live happily ever after.

There, I hope that explains it all to you.

actually, what you just described sounds to me is a perfect, flawed, character, which makes him infinitely more interesting to me.

I may have to read these books now.
