One of the reasons HP resonates so well with me is that the characters are all so beautifully human. There isn't one of the supposedly good guys who hasn't annoyed the hell out of me at least once. I like that. After all, we love the people we love not because they're flawless, and not even because of their flaws, but in spite of them. And, for me, that's what JKR did. She created a bunch of characters I love enough to accept their flaws.
Snape, for example. I love Snape, but boy, he was a rancid old arse. Were his intentions, ultimately, good or bad? I'd say both. Which doesn't make sense and annoys people, and therefore rarely happens in fiction. I love it.
Same goes for Lupin, Dumbledore, Harry himself etc...
