I liked it. I like how it was another example of how Scott's friends have a life outside of him, and that he's pretty self-centered. Plus there was foreshadowing over the previous books with Steven and Joseph spending loads of time together.

he came out to the rest of his friends in volume 5, but it was off panel because we're getting the story from scott's pov and he's too self centred to notice what's going on lol.

I thought that was a bit sudden, but I don't think it was totally out of nowhere since they were spending a lot of time together. I think it'll make more sense if he was bi instead cause he seemed pretty hung up on Julie before (or was that more in the movie only, I get mixed up)

I thought it was completely out of nowhere when I first read the series, but I've reread them recently and there's a lot of foreshadowing for it!

One of the sub-plots of the fourth book is Julie being insecure about her relationship with Stephen because she thinks he's interested in Knives (as far as I can tell); at the end, she and Stephen are together and she's all "I guess I had nothing to worry about!" while Stephen's all "ah... yeah..." and he's sat next to Joseph. (They sit together a lot in group scenes as well, by the way.)

And throughout the fifth book there's references as well--Neil refers to Stephen as "Captain Homo" and Stephen and Julie have definitely broken up by this point and she's pissed with him. And then there's a lot of build up in the sixth book as well that I completely missed--Knives' reaction to Scott assuming she was interested in Stephen, and much of Stephen and Joseph's interaction is easily read as couple-y when you know they are together.

I think Stephen Stills is just attracted to bitches, really, because Joseph is just as bad as Julie if not more. But it's not an asspull in the readthrough; O'Malley does a pretty good job of foreshadowing with a lot of the story, actually.

I kiiiiiind of saw it coming, to be honest. It was a surprise, but I did see it coming. It's very hidden and hinted at in the beginning, but, yeah. I can kind of understand you, but at the same time, even I saw it coming, and I'm a dunce.

Spoilers are usually clearly marked at the end of a post.
Of course everyone knows about the disclaimer. If you like fandomsecrets however, you're not going to be put off by the slim chance that you might have series plot development spoiled for you, but you are still going to be annoyed when it does happen.
What are the options anyway? Read every series you would ever want to before daring to look at a fs post, or stop visiting fs altogether?

Yeah same here, though when I looked back at it, it actually made more sense (I do remember being a little "wat" at the "we're making magic" part, though). I was still pretty surprised by it, especially since before Joseph, there wasn't really much of an indication he liked guys.

Maybe he's bi? I kinda want to know what his opinion on girls is still after all this, since despite Julie being a bitch, he seemed to love/care about her a lot.

I didn't like it either. I know they hinted at it a bit ahead of time (especially in vol 5), but it still seemed a little forced. Especially the way he talks about it when he tells Scott.

I'd been spoiled about it so I saw the foreshadowing as I was reading, but Joseph was the only character in the series that I absolutely couldn't stand so I really wished that the foreshadowing had been leading to him hooking up with anybody else.

i loved joseph's one liners throughout the series but imo, if o'malley wanted stills to be gay, i wish he had him end up with wallace somehow
