At first I thought she'd plagiarised JK Rowling cause all those second names are from the Harry Potter books...

Since Rowling did not make up a good portion of the names she used other authors could use them as well. I don't think she has copyright on names like "Lucius" or "Ginny".

She used to write HP fanfiction back in the day and wrote a huge series called "The Draco Trilogy" or something, but it turned out that she'd plagiarized a great deal of it. So fandom chased her away. Cut to X number of years later, she's a published author.

I've not read anything by her (including The Draco Trilogy), but I hear that she copied a lot of what she wrote as a fic author and used it in her published work.

As others have said, she wrote the Draco Trilogy, a big HP fanfiction. And what I was trying to say in the secret was that her original characters were pretty much carbon copies of the way she wrote the HP characters on her fic.

That always bothered me too since I'm pretty sure Cassandra Clare is a red head, and seemed to have body image issues back in the day (not allowing people to photograph her at conventions) and used Ginny/Clary as a mary sue. :(

On a technical level perhaps, but it's not impossible to be a talentless hack with such a limited pool of ideas that once you're exposed as a real plagiarist you switch gears and just start ripping off your own derivative crap.

Sarah Rees Brennan's are nothing like Cassandra Clare's. I didn't think they were as good as her fanfic (gasp, horror!), but she can definitely tell a good story and I think she's only going to get better.

Sarah's books are wonderful!
So does Cassandra's.
Come on people! She constructed great story in her fic (BTW Which one?). And then did it also in her book. So what? After 10 or so years who would read her fiction? Not so many people.
But her books are the very different story.
Get over it already.

I'm not whining about the plot (which I liked), I'm talking about the characters. Not even her fans can deny Jace is just LeatherPants!Draco with another name.

And people are still reading her fanfic, last time I checked. (Yeah, it's still out there, if you know where to look)

Unlike CC, who just repackaged her (horrifically plagiarised) HP fanfic, SRB actually came up with an original plot (ie, nothing used in her fanfic) and wrote characters who aren't recognisably characters from other works.

Read SRB's books. They rock.
