Notes:

Unfortunately a panfandom kink meme would be impossible to keep organized, since there are so many possible fandoms to choose from. But since lots of people seem to want some kind of meme: FS anon meme tomorrow?

Not the secret-poster, but, as you seem to be genuinely interested in the issues people had with the film: I personally felt that The Princess and the Frog was flawed because too many of the characters seemed to be comic relief. Tiana and her mother were the only characters who felt real to me. I didn't dislike it, but I did think it was one of Disney's weaker films. That's just a personal view, of course.

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2010-09-04 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a fair complaint, but it also seems a little weak to write the whole movie off as totally mediocre because of it?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-04 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I didn't think the entire thing was mediocre; I absolutely loved the character of Tiana, for one thing. I'm certainly not going to say that other people shouldn't think it was good. I was just a bit disappointed, personally.

(Possibly my enjoyment of the film was affected by the fact that I had some trouble understanding some of the accents, particularly Ray's (I'm English, and I'm not sure I'd ever heard a Cajun accent before), but of course that won't apply to everyone.)

My biggest problem was that the music wasn't memorable at all.

[identity profile] gully-moe.livejournal.com 2010-09-04 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree too.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-09-04 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm starting to think I'm the only one who totally disagrees with this. "When We're Human" gets lodged in my head all the time.

[identity profile] salukfan.livejournal.com 2010-09-04 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not; I find the music incredibly catchy and singable. There's not one song on that soundtrack that I don't love, and I'm fairly certain "When We're Human" is one of my favorite Disney songs, period.

YANA, that and Down in New orleans, all the time.

[identity profile] captain-sarah.livejournal.com 2010-09-04 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved the music. I mean, it's not Alan Menkan, but it wasn't terrible.

[identity profile] the-kumquat.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, whenever I get down or upset, I listen to "Dig a Little Deeper" on repeat and I perk right up.

[identity profile] humblebot.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I have this nagging feeling that people only think this because they only heard the songs once. If you listen to them 3 or so times (as everyone has for all their childhood Disney movies), quite a few of them are VERY catchy and memorable.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-05 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
My experience exactly! The songs blended together a bit on the first viewing, but I liked the movie enough to rewatch it on DVD, and the songs start to pop pretty quick after that.

[identity profile] hello-ilu.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
you're totally not. I listen to this shit SO MUCH. also imo Friends on the Other Side is one of the best villain songs everrrr omfghmvh *_____*

[identity profile] razpberry.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
you're not, you're not!! dude I could listen to this whole soundtrack (score included) on repeat for like days, I love it like whoah. 8D

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
You are SO not alone. I have the entire soundtrack on my mp3 player and "Friends on the Other Side" is pretty much my favorite villain song now. <3

[identity profile] alenxa.livejournal.com 2010-09-04 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Signed.

[identity profile] duowolf.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
I would have to agree it would have been a much better film without the singing.

[identity profile] missfahrenheit.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I walked out of it singing the songs from another Disney movie...

This was originally an long-ass response, but I tried to rework it to be smaller.

My opinion: the animation was great. The music was okay--nothing bad, but nothing particularly memorable outside of the villain song. The worst part for me was the pace. It felt rushed and erratic which resulted in being unable to dig into characters outside of the most basic traits (ftr, I don't have too much of a problem with that. This isn't the first movie Disney has released to that effect, particularly when it comes to villains simply being evil for evil's sake rather than being driven by something a bit more complex). The songs didn't help; instead of helping the plot along, some of them just felt like a big, showy distraction. I noticed that there seemed to be very little time pre-Frog and even post-Frog and too much time in the middle, which also might have contributed to what I mentioned before.

Oh, I should add: the short running length (90 minutes or so?) is more than likely a major cause to all of this, but having recently seen the original Land Before Time because of a older sibling's nostalgia, it's also entirely possible to have a well-paced and workable plot in a very short amount of time (LbT was only about 70 mins).

I actually did enjoy the movie and thought it was nice. I liked Tiana's personality and loved Charlotte's insane energy. I think it's silly to question anyone's taste over the movie, but the overhype is probably going to bite this one in the butt for a while.

That's pretty much a straw man, nobody in this thread has discounted it on the grounds that it was racist, and after the film came out it seemed to me most people agreed that it was pretty solid on race issues aside from the unfortunate use of african masks as being "evil."

I haven't seen the movie yet, but the fact that the villain is a voodoo priest kind of rubs me the wrong way. (Though he looks fucking awesome so IDK.) :/

Voodoo =/= evil

[identity profile] torayakari.livejournal.com 2010-09-05 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
But one of the good characters, Mama Odie, was also a voodoo priestess. She used her voodoo for good.
