He's a morally bankrupt, ex-CIA assassin who was an occasional friend/occasional enemy to the Green Arrow. When GA kicked the bucket and his son (Connor Hawke) took up the hero'ing mantle, Eddie- out of possible respect and probable boredom- took it upon himself to show the kid the ropes. And then became the greatest sidekick ever (because what nineteen year old masked vigilante DOESN'T want a sarcastic, chain-smoking, 40-year old murderer watching their back in a fight?).

Actually it wasn't just supposed to be for humour. Not in a 'teehee it made it sound gay!' way anyway. That Simon and Nick are in love is a running joke between them, and they decided to pass it on to their characters, but more extreme than Shaun of the Dead and Spaced. So it's more like they were just having fun making their characters gay, rather than 'teehee, that sounded a bit weird!'

They meant it to be a subtle romance, in the sort of way that often in movies it's more implied that eventually a couple will get to gether. Plus the other stuff in the entry is just adorable. Those guys talk like that about and to each other *all the time*. Their wife and girlfriend must be very understanding.
