I kind of thought that.

Then I read it, and it was FUCKING AWESOME.

[identity profile] majutsukai.livejournal.com 2010-09-10 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
So the entire fanbase is doing this?

This is a rhetorical question, the entire fanbase is not doing this

Anyway, I think it goes without saying that you're not retarded for not being interested in it, and this is pretty much a textbook case of hype aversion, which I think we've all experienced. So, that part is cool.

But let's not tar the entire fandom with the same brush, kay?

(Also, massive? Really?)

(Anonymous) 2010-09-10 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah damn that massive fanbase who are almost entirely limited to F!S, SA, PA and the official MSPA forums! DAMN THEM, THOSE INESCAPABLE INTERNET POSTERS! I JUST CAN'T NOT LOOK AT THEIR POSTS ARGHHHHH *furiously reads every single comment on every single MSPA thread on the whole internet and rages about how people can possibly like this comic!! fuck!!!!*

Seriously though basically all fandoms are terrible, since the people who are the dumbest are also sadly the most vocal and the most willing to air their awful opinions. But for some reason MSPA inspires a disproportionate amount of rage compared to, say, Supernatural, which genuinely seems to have a very big fandom and has a secret posted about it nearly every single day. It's fine to not like the freakin' comic, it's a niche comic for nerds, who cares.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-10 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm actually a bit confused at the huge RAGE over MSPA that seems to be rampant? Not trying to be snippy or anything, honestly. If someone could give me a legitimate reason for this, I'd actually be grateful because it sort of boggles my mind. Does this just happen with any series that gets popular?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-10 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I think F!S overrepresents almost all fandoms, and people get sick of seeing secrets that aren't about their fandom, so they get mad. I'm sure that the majority of people in the world aren't rabid Supernatural fans and definitely not crazed HINABN fans, but if you took a sample just of F!S commenters, this is what your conclusion might be! Also MSPA has a rather enthusiastic (maybe over-enthusiastic) fanbase who like to leap to its defense (hey I'm not innocent here, obviously). I'm not sure why people get so mental over the whole thing or why anyone bothers to just post secrets of "I DON'T LIKE

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2010-09-10 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it's weird that FS is a maelstrom of "THIS WEBCOMIC IS TOO POPULAR" (Hanna is not a Boy's Name is another example) when in the grand scheme of things, they're really, very, not. So it confuses me in a way that secrets about being sick of a popular movie or anime don't.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
OP here.

I had no less than 5 people on my flist spontaneously make posts about MSPA on the same day (excluding the day's F!S post which had an MSPA secret or two) ranging from "Hey this comic is pretty amazing, everyone should read it" to "WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU NOT READING THIS COMIC??" Otherwise I might have ended up making this a Hetalia secret. Heck, it even could apply to the Bible.

I didn't mean to imply that the entire fanbase falls on the forceful side, just that every fan I've personally encountered has been so overwhelmingly READ THIS COMIC to me. I feel like I should have the right to say "No, thank you, I'm not interested" without it being followed by "WTF WHY NOT???"

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
No problem man, I was just kidding in the first part of my post, I do agree that sometimes the fans (including me) can be a bit nuts over it and should sometimes shut up! Your flist posting about it doesn't make it a massive fandom though ;D But it's fine if you don't want to read it, it would just make more sense if you based it on your personal dislike rather than "Someone told me to so I don't wanna!"

(Anonymous) 2010-09-10 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I never encountered that problem - I just checked it out of curiosity after hearing about it in passing. I was turned off by the art at first too, but the series makes up for it in so many ways.

But sorry that people are being jerks. :( Someone calling others "retarded" for not picking up a series is always just incredibly rude. Never seen that in the fandom from what I've seen, but sucks that it ruined the series for you, man.

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2010-09-10 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
We just get over-excited because we think it's awesome, because that's what fandom is, right?

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2010-09-10 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoever said that is not representative of the entire fandom and more likely than not needs to be slapped.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-10 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a totally random and unrelated question, but how did you get your little userinfo icon like that?

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2010-09-10 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You have to enable Cyrillic features and then purchase an icon switch.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-10 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry if you feel like you're being leaned on to read something you don't want to read.

But.

There's kind of a line between "I don't have any real interest in this" and "BAW SOMETHING I DON'T LIKE IS POPULAR MAKE IT GO AWAY," you know? And you're coming down pretty firmly on the bratty side.

[identity profile] holy-shpootnik.livejournal.com 2010-09-10 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Your likes are not my likes and anyone who says you are retarded for not liking something you dislike then maybe they should just take a healthy dose of Stop Being Big Bullying Babies.

That is not very coherent, but I get what you mean, OP. I recommend things that I like, and I fangirl them. I also know what it is like to be on the receiving end of 'oh you just don't get it, you must be /dumb/' sort of attitude. It's fuckin' shitty. I try not to do it, because it really is nothing more than a dick move. The world takes all kinds.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-10 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice picture choice, OP. Of course the picture choice makes me assume you are an MSPA fan who is trying to find the AGGRESSIVELY PEER-PRESSURING fans so that you can avoid them, but hey, if it works!

[identity profile] kinosino.livejournal.com 2010-09-10 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Blanket statements aren't usually the best way to start out in a fandom anyway.

Unrelatedly, back when I read like two dozen webcomics or so, I had the habit of becoming a loyal reader of any webcomic, no matter how badly drawn or written, no matter how stupid the premise, if they made a Hitchhiker's Guide reference somewhere in the first few pages I read.

[identity profile] maskitheclown.livejournal.com 2010-09-10 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel, I'm like that with everything. The more pressure I feel to see/do something, less likely I am to really see/do it.

[identity profile] homestar.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'll never understand insulting people who don't want to give a visual series a try based on its appearance. It's a comic. The visuals are important. This 'read it anyway and if you don't you're fucking stupid' mentality is just making me resent the comic and its fanbase.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah it's a comic but half of the updates are text-based rather than visual-based (like, it will just be a panel of the character typing on their computer and then a huge long chatlog underneath that panel), so the visuals aren't ALL of it. I'd rather have a shittily-drawn comic with great characters and dialogue rather than, um, HINABN :V Of course people have different priorities about that stuff, so it's fine if they don't read because they hate the art, but there's like two different author-made styles of art in it plus a whole art team that produces many different art styles for the flash animations, which most people don't read far enough to see so they underestimate the graphics. I'd never call people retarded because they don't like it, but I think it's a little dumb for anyone to look at a couple of pages and go "BLARG I DONT LIKE TEH DRAWINGS!! COMIC SUX" without mentioning the writing or characters at all.

[identity profile] homestar.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
If the visuals weren't important, it wouldn't have them at all. Watchmen had additional written content, too, but at its core it's still a comic book.

I didn't bring up HINABN, but since you did-- yes, that comic is terribly written and stupidly gorgeous. I want more than anything for Tessa to get a writer so that the quality of the writing would match the quality of the artwork. But I didn't start reading it because the paint-by-numbers plotline sounded interesting-- I started reading it for the pretty. I got intrigued because the artwork was appealing.

But in order for a comic to intrigue someone, the art has to appeal to them on some level. Some people can look past MSPA's art, and some people find it charming. I just don't see why not liking the artwork isn't a viable excuse for not wanting to read something. iF sHakEsPeaRe WaS WrItTeN lIke ThIs, I wOuLdN't ReAd It, No MaTtEr HoW gOoD iT wAs.

I just would like to know when it stopped being okay for using a comic's art as the basis for not wanting to read it, or any other comic out there.

Stay away from stuff that you're fairly certain you won't enjoy due to hype, just stay away. And ignore people who like it, cuz it's not that big a deal.

That said, yeah, I don't get the hype either. Characters did not strike a chord with me. Story is not grabbing me. The pesterlogs are a pain to read depending on the character's typing style (though giving each character a distinct typing style is a nifty idea). The one girl character having a crush on the girl who I thought had a really cool look got me to finish giving the series a try... and my feeling toward it is still 'meh'. I... like the art and not much else about it :/

tl;dr - Let people enjoy their stuff, and don't read it if you're really really sure you're not gonna like it.

[identity profile] xeleniam.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
Not saying everyone does it, but I get annoyed at the "just read it" types. Well, I tried, and it's been boring. Also, if it takes forever to read I probably won't get into it, simply because I can't just sit around waiting for it to get interesting. I wanted to like it, really, the fans seem to be completely rabid about it, but it just doesn't interest me.
