Does it strike you as something particularly likely to happen in an American mainstream Summer blockbuster? Maybe if Kirk and Spock were women, maybe, but that's just the double standard in play.

Trek has enough trouble with putting gays in the TV shows without bullshitting or chickening out of it, let alone the movies. It's not Torchwood (hah, Trekwood!) but I dunno, give it time for attitudes to change. Even though the actors don't have a problem with it, there's a large percentage of the population who clearly don't have hobbies and make a point of having a problem with it. Now, that being said, I am optimistic that it will surely happen within the next ten years, but even then Trek's first officially gay on-screen couple is infinitely more likely to be a pair of brand new characters.

Trek's cautious forays into gay territory make me cringe. The Host, The Outcast, that DS9 episode, it's all very "we tried to be liberal but sorry, must protect the poor straight people".

Movies with gay leads will always be the odd ones out, or something for the straight people to coo over (Brokeback Mountain), and there are precious few 'serious' TV shows with gay leads.

Yep, they just chicken right the fuck out.
But at least you can take lessons from it. The sheer amount of gayfail I've witnessed over the years has left me resolute in not wanting to go down the same path. Consequentially I've been boning up on all subjects LGBT. I have my suspicions that other straight writers, their research didn't go much further than "Ew, dudes kissing." or even asking any gay friends (if they have any) what they think first.

It's kind of a shame when you think about since Gene Rodennberry was pretty interested in the inclusion of a gay character at some point in the series.

I seriously doubt it; he was aware of the K/S fans and he didn't exactly dissuade them, since he said the affection between them was "sufficient" for a sexual relationship, "if that were the particular style of the 23rd century." So I don't think he'd be the sort of guy to forbid them from adding a gay character to the show.

Nope, that was other producers who have yet to be ratted out by name among the TNG writers. Roddenberry had always intended for one in... season 6, I believe? But he died that year and his influence/power had already waned a great deal, so.

Nope.

I believe he had an interest in including gays later on.

Probably not around TOS since he's admitted to having been a man of his times if I understand correctly.

But he was planning on including said gay character into TNG but then he died and the control of the Star Trek franchise fell to someone else, so the gay crew-member ended up never being done.

If/when Star Trek returns to the small screen (I'm betting it will after the new trilogy is complete, unless they continue making films past the contracted three, which is also likely), I have high hopes for an out gay character. There're more of them now than there were even five years ago. But it is annoying/depressing the way Star Trek's been dragging their feet about this.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. The most likely by far.
Heh. Now I'm actually kinda wondering if the next Trek series that follows the movies will be a rebooted TNG :p

lol, probably not. I'd be interested in a series set in the reboot universe, but the nerd rage would be incredible. They'd probably do another time jump like they did between TOS and TNG.
