Can I ask why? At one point a few years ago the Fawcett Society had that pic on their website - they sure as hell didn't mind.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's just gross. It's a ploy to get ~*pussy*~. There's no way a man could comprehend what feminism is. At least not beyond the "equal rights!" stage. Sorry. I just don't believe it.

It's the kind of shit that white liberal douchebags wear to bars in Brooklyn and expect to get laid immediately because they're sensitive. Hell, they might even bring their guitar and play "Blackbird" for you.

[personal profile] thene 2010-09-11 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that makes sense for this secret as Bailey has been pretty openly political for his whole career and feminism is just one aspect of that (iirc he's also a Trotskyist, which is not something commonly associated with getting pussy).

There's no way a man could comprehend what feminism is. Failure of imagination imo. I know my bff gets it and he doesn't even like pussy.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care. I think the shirt is gross.

[identity profile] nonameformylj.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Urgh urgh urgh. It's not often I have a go at people on here because it's quite wanky enough without my input, but REALLY? You actually believe that?

1) By assuming all men wear a t-shirt like that to get sex, you're reducing them all to sex-driven, unthinking, manipulative pricks. And as a feminist, you're really supposed to be able to see beyond ridiculous over-generalisations based on gender.

2) "There's no way a man could comprehend feminism" again asserts that they somehow have lesser skills of reasoning or empathising etc. than females, that their tiny minds just couldn't grasp such *special concepts*. And okay, there are a studies that say that women are better at all things emotional, but "better" doesn't mean that the ones who aren't better, can't do it at all. What is there about feminism that you think is so special that a man can't understand it? Do we have some special button on our elbows that opens our minds more than a man's, because if we do, I don't think I've found mine yet. Perhaps that's why I just can't understand why your sexism is actually feminism.

3) The whole point of those Fawcett t-shirts is to show that feminists do come in all forms, and - *gasp* - genders, so saying you hate it when men wear it is really rather missing the point.

4) Bill Bailey is married. He hardly needs a ploy to pull women (and even if he did, his sense of humour would far outweigh a bloody t-shirt).

5) When you make the point about white liberals in bars being sensitive with clothing, given your point about feminism being for females, too, are you saying that only the people who feel the oppression can understand it? Because if that's the case, I'd honestly like to know how we're ever meant to progress in the world. If we can never truly understand one and other's suffering or disadvantages in life, then society should, theoretically, just stop. But it doesn't; it might take a long time but we carry on learning and understanding each other because that is what we're built to do.

...Through typing that, I've calmed down a bit, and apologise for being a little sharp with you at the beginning. It just absolutely boggles my mind when people who call themselves feminists - or at least proclaim to know what it's all about - adhere to stereotypes about, and don't grant equality to, men, because it seems like the most massive own goal you can make.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
lololol. Don't try and talk to me ever again.

Hi!

OMG SELF, RUN! XD

Or in all seriousness, I shall take your lack of actual reply to mean I've stumped you. I probably haven't, but as a feeble woman who dares to see people as people, I need the ego boost, you see :D Ta-ra!

There's no way a man could comprehend what feminism is. At least not beyond the "equal rights!" stage.

There's so much fail in this I can't even.

What the fuck are you ON?

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I must be on some wacky shit to have the audacity suggest there's something that MEN, WONDERFUL MEN cannot understand, right? WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE MENFOLK?!

I think I'm smokin' some Go Fuck Yourself.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Feel free to explain how it is that men are incapable of grasping feminism, then. Particularly the ones who've lived as women.

Take your time, I'll be waiting for this one.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's pretty clear we were talking about this straight guy in the post and not transgender/genderqueer men and women.

But really, I don't know how someone who isn't biologically female would be able to understand what it's like to be biologically female, and that's what it takes to understand a lot of the talk that went on in the Second Wave, because people who were genderqueer weren't included. And from what I've seen, straight men don't understand anything about feminism beyond the basics that occurred in the Second Wave. Most men cannot understand what it is like to be a woman at all, because they are not women. And I don't want them to try and share in my fucking struggle. I'm not interested in hearing what they have to say and having them be my ~*ally*~

So there ya go. If you have a response, that's AWESOME, but I'm not like, gonna read it.

You said MEN, full stop.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Fucking own it. And shut up.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
omg i let some ~*~*~transphobia~*~*~ fall out YOU CAUGHT ME.

EXCEPT GO EAT SHIT. MEN ARE SCUM.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
MEN ARE SCUM.

And there it is. There it fucking is. You are part of the vein of crazy people that, with a few well-placed asshole remarks, undo years of work by true feminists and convince many people of both genders that everyone who supports the equality of men and women is comfuckingpletely insane. Which of course, in the long run, makes it harder for women's rights to move forward. So the collected actions of you lot mean that oppression gains new life. That the glass ceiling lives longer. That the line between sexual harassment/sexual assault/outright rape and "durp hurp boys will be boys" remains frustratingly blurry in the eyes of so many.

I hope you're proud.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I can't even begin to tear this comment a new asshole, because it is completely made out of the things.

What is a "true feminist"? Do tell me. And don't call me crazy -- that's just ridiculous and also offensive to people with mental illnesses. And that penultimate sentence... I can't. I just can't. I don't even understand it it is so ridiculous.

P.S. It's not the 1960s. The glass ceiling still exists, but we're not playing the game the same way, Gloria Steinem.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Actual feminist" = someone who doesn't actively make it harder for people trying to increase the depth and breadth of opportunities available to women by spouting off unhinged shit about all men being scum while knowing full well that it's going to piss someone off and make them more likely to think "what a bitch" the next time they see someone campaigning for women's rights, instead of "hmm she's got a point." Slamming shut the minds that we've eased slowly open inch by inch with our sweat and blood. Tell me, who or what are you benefiting by saying that besides your own misandrist ego? And discriminating against half of the entire human race is horrifyingly cruel, whether it's the half with vaginas or the half without.

Also, you associating "crazy" with people who have mental illnesses and saying I shouldn't use the term for negativity implies that a) I should therefore be calling people with mental illnesses crazy, and b) anyone with a mental illness is irrational enough to constitute "crazy" as our culture defines it, as opposed to depressed or obsessive or stuttering or brilliant or whatever beautiful and unique flavor of humanity they are. The "crazy is an ableist insult" trend is kind on the surface but subtly demeaning at its core.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry you took so long to write that out, but the fact of the matter is that lots of different people practice feminism in different ways. There is no "true feminism." That's a concept left over from kind of archaic Second Wave philosophy.

Anyway, either you're a man or you're 40+ or you're a babyfem who doesn't really understand yet why it's okay to be angry at men and discuss it. All of the above are okay, I guess, but it doesn't change the fact that you're wrong.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I just didn't notice you'd responded for a while (I do take quite a while to type, but not quite that long. However, implying that my argument is less valid and/or somewhat pitiful because supposedly I took a couple hours to write it out - which I easily could have if I had a speech and learning disability - just underscores that bit about a subtle ablist bias...but that's a different can of worms, so never mind.) Anyway, whatever the hell thinking all men are irredeemably horrible is, I just can't digest that as "feminism". That is bigotry and prejudice, as reprehensible a statement as "all blacks are scum" (or "all whites are scum" - you would probably think that's a better analogy), and in the same way, nobody would say that calling an entire race scum, whether the oppressed one or the oppressors, was an opinion associated with helping to advance civil rights.

It's baffling how you think anyone who isn't middle-aged, male, or a newbie feminist will arrive at the ALL SEX IS RAPE, ALL MEN ARE RAPISTS, HURRAH WOMAN POWER conclusion after a while. Some of us aren't so vitriolic as to fight hate A with hate B. A great man (man, oh shi-) once said that you must be the change you wish to see in the world. That means that if you want acceptance for both genders, you are accepting of both genders. Goodness knows what it is you want.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

lol u mad.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
That is one oldass meme. And yeah, kinda.

I'm just gonna pop in here

(Anonymous) 2010-09-14 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
You're extrapolating an awful lot of material from hir few statements. And you're also trivializing legitimate schools of feminist thought because you think that the ones you subscribe to are better.

I guarantee you that the feminist movement has not been hurt by women speaking up about how they dislike men. And comparing saying "MEN ARE SCUM" to racism, bigotry, and prejudice, is 100% insulting to real incidences of bigotry and racism and prejudice, which by certain definitions can only occur against minority or marginalized groups, i.e. NOT men.

Also, as [livejournal.com profile] tamburlaine described below, your logic is faulty. Wanting equal rights for men and women does NOT mean that men and women should be considered the same, and so what A is must be what B is. No. That is not what equal rights are. Equal rights for women does not mean treating them and seeing them as men, it means treating them with the respect they are due based on their own needs as a separate sex. Equal rights for minorities means exactly the same thing.

You might also take the time to notice that [livejournal.com profile] tamburlaine never actually said they were a feminist, so your rage might kind of be moot. But I suppose it's convenient for you that someone on the internet said something vaguely relevant to your most recent mis-educated rage issues.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, and since you're probably not going to accept that definition of a feminist, how about this one?

A feminist believes in the equality of men and women.

So I guess you are a true feminist, if you also believe that women are scum.

[identity profile] tamburlaine.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry I exploded. I meant cis-gendered men and that's that. I should have clarified.

Re: You said MEN, full stop.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2010-09-14 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, cool.

Ignoring the wank above, I will simply say agree to disagree on the idea that cisgender men can also grasp feminism.
