Or worse, when it's not established but there is no build up what so ever.

But yeah, this.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same. I need to know why they are together, how it happened, what made it possible, etc... If an author can sell me on that, I'm happy to roll with it. If they just need me to erase what I know of canon and accept this new version? Can't do it.

[identity profile] corrakun.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
okay but what if canon sticks them together and doesn't explain how it all happened?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
pretty OP meant only non-canon pairings, otherwise the development is in the canon

LOL! Yeah, that happens too. Anyone have a clue how Bulma and Vegeta got together? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

[identity profile] aeonamber.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. If there's no basis for the pairing, I just cannot get into the fic.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a little more forgiving especially if I like the couple enough, or if they're characters who like each other to some degree and are together enough in canon that it could happen without needing a complicated explanation. But I know what you mean. And when I do fanfic, if I put non-canon characters together, I try to make sure it makes some sense.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
If Luffy/Zoro actually happened, my eyebrows wouldn't even twitch. That's how natural they feel to me, even though I don't ship them. There's lot's of pairings like that for me, so I can ship a lot without feeling bothered. But if it's too crackish, I'd like an explanation as well. (Not OP.)

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's completely alright.

You can't like everything. You are missing out on a lot of great fics if you are not into non-con, for example, but this does not mean that you should read non-con fics if you don't like the idea of it. Or you shouldn't like all the pairings in every fandom, even if there are some great fanfictions about all of them (or most of them, at least).

It's not a big deal, really. :)

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I do the same thing. I know I'm probably missing out on good fics. Fics for pairings that I ship, no less. But to me, half the fun on my non-canon pairings is seeing how they might get together.

I'll read pretty much anything but I get hung up on this when I'm writing, even if it's a total crack pairing; I need to know either how they got together or what it is that makes them stay together - or both - or else I can't write it. I'm currently writing a fusion fic about a pairing I've loved for ages and I realised today that this means I now have to come up with a new, just-for-this-setting version of how they met and how they got together. :D

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be like that but you know, I prefer established relationship fic now..

[identity profile] tasogare-n-hime.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it sometimes throws me a bit when I'm trying to read a fic. It's never bothered me that much though because I've always considered fanfiction of any kind AU. I stiff prefer fics where the relationship is developed over time.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda see your point. I'm not very picky when I read about my pairing (except for non-con)so I read pretty much everything. It's okay to want the fics you read to "make sense" in your head and with what's canon.

[identity profile] srsfnbsns.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I like seeing how characters get together, but sometimes I get tired of the whole getting together part. I want to read about them together later on. Often in established relationship fics, they do go over how they got together, so it's not a big deal for me. I like not having to constantly relive the get together. I want to see them without the drama and angst that seems to accompany many of those fics and just revel in the fluff or whatever.

Besides, for some of those odder pairings, you take what you can get.

Sucks to be you. Just make sure not to bash on anyone who writes it or enjoys it.

[identity profile] smallearthcat.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, you know, I kind of agree, but kind of not. I mean, I much prefer to have an explanation for how a non-canon couple get together, but there are some pairings which seem so close to canon for me already that I don't actually need the build-up story. Of course, sometimes all I need is one really good explanatory get-together fic and from then on have no problem with established relationship stories for the pairing. And there are still plenty that I pretty much need the get-together every time.

So, yeah. I'm all over the place on what I read depending upon the pairing.

[identity profile] iapetusneume.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I get where you're coming from. For me it really depends on the pairing. I generally seek out the relationship development fics for crack pairings. With other non-canon pairings, it depends on more factors. (Sometimes, the least of which is if I'm in the mood for it or not.)

[identity profile] loveronhermione.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I much prefer canon to non-canon stuff, and if it's non-canon, I want to know how it happened.

[identity profile] fencer-x.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Are you the same person who posted this to FFrants the other day? :/

I can understand only wanting to read get-togethers for a new pairing when it's...well, NEW. But after reading your 50th get-together fic, don't you even remotely care about what their second date would be like? Their first big fight? What happens when one brings the other home to meet the parents? Random slices-of-life? I LOVE get-togethers, but there's SO much that happens beyond a couple getting together, I just would get so bored.

Really, everybody's missing out on great fics because of their tastes--or at least most people. Because everybody has their things they can't read. That's why fanfic's always labelled etc. You're probably still getting as much enjoyment as anyone else!

[identity profile] crimsontriforce.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
For what little non-canon I ship, I'd like to see every author's view on how they got together at least once. Then I'm glad if they build on that and show other stuff. But I like to see how their particular take on the characterization and dynamics works at the beginning of the relationship.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you to an extent. I ship quite a few non-canon couples, and for me a large part of the fun of shipping a non-canon pairing is imagining all the different ways they might get together. But my preference for get-together fic or established relationship fic seems to vary from pairing to pairing. Some pairings I want to read about the get-together process every time. Some pairings I read a few (or a few dozen) good fics about how they get together and then I feel like I'm ready to move on to devouring the established relationship fics that explore their dynamic as a couple, the fluffy future-fics, etc. And sometimes I just need one really convincing get-together fic to be able to buy the established relationship fics.

Maybe it depends on how plausible or implausible that pairing is in canon -- non-canon pairings can range from those which are practically canon, are constantly being teased in canon, to those in which the characters haven't even met in canon.
