I agree with you to an extent. I ship quite a few non-canon couples, and for me a large part of the fun of shipping a non-canon pairing is imagining all the different ways they might get together. But my preference for get-together fic or established relationship fic seems to vary from pairing to pairing. Some pairings I want to read about the get-together process every time. Some pairings I read a few (or a few dozen) good fics about how they get together and then I feel like I'm ready to move on to devouring the established relationship fics that explore their dynamic as a couple, the fluffy future-fics, etc. And sometimes I just need one really convincing get-together fic to be able to buy the established relationship fics.

Maybe it depends on how plausible or implausible that pairing is in canon -- non-canon pairings can range from those which are practically canon, are constantly being teased in canon, to those in which the characters haven't even met in canon.

THIS, so much. Most of my ships tend to be non-canon, which is why I can't read fics that go straight into established relationships, I have to see how it happened, damn it! 'coz canon's never going to give me my fix, that's what fics are for! I'm definitely all about the get-together process, reading about marriage and babies and all that bores me. [Maybe when I'm older, it'll appeal more, but I'm 22, I'm not interested in the white picket fences and 2.5 kids and all that]
