It wasn't exactly depicted as an ideal situation the second time either, you know. More like an necessary evil.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Then why was it not considered a necessary evil when it was about stopping Lilith? Sam made mistakes, absolutely, but like he said, he wasn't drinking demon blood for kicks.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I would assume because a) he kept it secret from Dean, and b) by the season finale they'd exhausted all options, whereas when it was about killing Lilith there were still other ways to kill her.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
(a) Keeping something a secret from Dean = evil? Well, at least that's an easy moral compass.

(b) No one presented any other options, ever. No one discussed going after the Colt, no one thought about looking for other demon-killing objects, nothing.

(no subject)

I had a problem with that whole necessary evil thing and its lack of continuity. Two episodes back they were all up in arms, beating the shit out of Dean and handcuffing him to every piece of furniture in sight because he wanted to give Michael a ride. Then Sam suggests to do the same for Lucifer AND go to hell in the process and everyone's like, "Sure, need a hand? Here's some demon blood to smooth the passage." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Anonymous) 2010-09-11 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean was giving up. Sam was trying to save the world.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean was trying to save the world too, in his own way. He was gambling on option which had the least amount of risk. Sam's plan would have resulted in the horrific deaths of everyone if he had failed but Dean thought that by giving in, he could at least save some of them.

[identity profile] ginzai.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've a major issue with that as well, especially because they could have so easily written out Sam drinking demon blood in the S5 finale entirely. I'd have vastly preferred it that way, especially since they seemed to be trying to press the whole "humanity victorious" message and having Sam hopped up on demon blood is a supernatural creature himself, not a regular human who manages to accomplish the imposible.

So, I sort of agree? Just from the other side. I think Sam was very wrong in S4 for a lot of reasons and want to see that recognized. I think they messed up S5 though, and I'd rather see that part corrected than have Sam be retroactively validated for what he did in S4.

[identity profile] twenty-rooks.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The blood wasn't for beating Lucifer though, it was for Sam's body being able to contain Lucifer. That's why Ruby wanted Sam to drink it in the first place, wasn't it? To prepare him for Lucifer? She played a rather long game, there. Didn't someone say that he shouldn't have needed the blood to use his powers, but that Ruby lured him into using it? I think that that someone made a comparison to Dumbo and the feather he "used" to fly.

[identity profile] missjigsaw23.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
It was Ruby that made that comparison, actually. "You didn't need the feather to fly, Dumbo. You had it in you the whole time."

[identity profile] gleeker13.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to comment on the content of the secret, I just wanted to say that I love your Ruby drawing, anon.

[identity profile] phoenix-bellamy.livejournal.com 2010-09-11 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
In S4 I hated that he was hiding behind all those good intentions (you know, the old saying "the road to hell is paved with good intentions") instead of admitting he was doing for revenge and because the blood made him feel powerful. And of course, hiding it from Dean didn't help... I felt like he was lying to himself way more than he was lying to his brother...

[identity profile] janekrahe.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
The point that you seem to be missing, anon, is that Sam used the "killing Lilith" thing as an excuse to justify his addiction. He was like a baseball player saying, "But... the steroids help me win games!!!1!"

For Sam, killing Lilith wasn't a way to save the world. It was a way to prove to himself that his addiction was okay.

hmmm, very interesting. I've never seen it that way.

Oh gosh. You're not very good at processing information, are you?

[identity profile] janekrahe.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
So, I'm assuming you completely missed the writers talking about how Sam's journey during the fourth season was an allegory for addiction. Sam was being portrayed as a drug addict. It's even pointed out in Good God Y'All, with Sam talking about how his desire to save lives was really just a way for him to justify his addiction.

You're not very good at reading between the lines, huh?

THIS SECRET IS SUSPICIOUS TO ME

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't like how Sam was treated through most of that season. :/ EVERYTHING IS SAM'S FAULT EVER. EVER.

[identity profile] jensenrick.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
That pretty much sums up Season 5 as well.

[identity profile] fire-at-wi11.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm sick of everything being Sam's fault. I mean some things ARE his fault, but not EVERYTHING. Let's blame Dean for some of his shortcomings as well -_-;

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing I remember Dean ever being called out on is the whole selling his soul thing, and even then it's portrayed sympathetically (not that it wasn't, but if we're blaming Sam for fucking things up even though he had good intentions, Dean deserves it too). Though we could be expected to not take Dean's views on everything, cause for the hero of the show, he has a pretty skewed moral compass.

I remember reading this interesting piece of meta that drew a parallel for Sam and Lucifer both being scapegoats for each of their dysfunctional families. I should really look for it again, it drew up several good points./ramble

[identity profile] fire-at-wi11.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Because we all know the sun shines out of Castiel's ass and if he suggests it then it must be the right thing to do. -_-;

[identity profile] belledewinter.livejournal.com 2010-09-12 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
I was pretty surprised Castiel was totally on board with that idea when the rest of them went D: at least the first time they heard it. Maybe they were all just that desperate?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-12 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
I can only agree with you. It still gets me furious, even when I just think about it. Sam didn't deserve all the hate! No, it wasn't ideal what he did, but he did it with all the right intentions, and to me, that counts...
