One of these days I'll actually play both of them for more than five minutes.

[identity profile] kolink.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
majoras mask is awesome..I actually didn't like it when it first came out, since it was supposed to be an OOT sequel but I was like WAHH this doesnt have anything to do with it! or zelda or hyrule or anything so I didn't even give it a chance. Recently, like within the past 3 years I gave it a play and since then have beaten it twice. It's a really good game, I cant even say for sure which of the two I like more, but majoras mask is under appreciated..its got this dark vibe to it.reaal creepy sometimes, good story. the masks were awesome..when I heard skyward sword was a MM sequel I was so excited, I was hoping maybe the masks would make an appearance, like atleast on the wall of link's house or something dgjff but that was shattered into a million pieces.
I will hope forever
I need a better zelda icon considering I love zelda so much..

For me it's a toss-up. OoT had a bigger scope and I loved that, but I really loved the slightly sad/creepy tone of Majora's Mask, too. If MM had a couple more dungeons it would probably edge out OoT, though.

[identity profile] lilweirdomokyn.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
All I can think of to say to this is HELL YEAH! I liked how Majora's Mask is about helping people, not going on some grand quest to save the kingdom right away. It's nice to see this game getting more love.

[identity profile] ryttu3k.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
After that creepypasta, I can no longer look at MM the same way >.> Oops.

ahhh this is popping up everywhere
I will never sleep again

this turned into a textwall I am sorry

I pretty much agree with what miss_prince further up the thread said.

I love both games, both OoT's epic scope, but I can say that I enjoy MM's story more, in a story telling way? Like, OoT is great and expansive. I love it, it was my first ever Zelda game, and made me fall in love with the series, but MM really appeals to my attraction to character-driven stories over plot or objection-driven stories.

OoT is like an old poem of a hero-- expansive, full of adventure and overcoming adversity, but at the same time still very linear in terms of plot. MM is sort of like a morbid choose your own adventure book where no matter which selection you make-- you have losses. Even when you flip back to the beginning you have to live with the memory of failure, the lose ends you failed to tie up.

I think that by playing through those same three days, I came to know the characters within Termina, and became attached to them? The game became less of a mission to save the world out of obligation to give the poem a good ending or see what happened in the game and more of a desire to save them because I cared about them.

omigosh this is becoming a text wall

TL;DR: I LIKE BOTH GAMES FOR DIFFERENT REASONS but if I had to pick between the two I would pick Majora's Mask as well.

Majora's Mask is infinitely more heart-wrenching and has subtleties and character-based drama that OoT does not. It's based on tiny details and plotforks, whereas OoT is heavily rooted in "YOU ARE A HERO YOU MUST SAVE THE LAND AND IT DON'T MATTER HOW YOU DO IT" straightforwardness.

I've beaten OoT many, many more times than Majora's Mask, but if I had to choose one of them, I would choose MM over OoT in a heartbeat.

I love Majora's Mask much more than OOT, so you're not alone.

[identity profile] father-cat.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
WOOT

I think I might agree with you, even though I love OoT A LOT as well.

[identity profile] snideways.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This WOULD get posted the day that creepypasta is supposed to end. :C

[identity profile] majutsukai.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretty much... yeah. No contest as far as I'm concerned.

OoT is the game that got me into the series. It has its place, both in my own personal history and in the history of the series as a whole, but I've always liked Majora's Mask better.

Sidenote: what is this creepypasta people keep mentioning?

I was just listening to the Four Giants' theme yesterday and got crazy goosebumps. It's my favorite Zelda, and a lot of that music is fantastic.

I agree, OP.

[identity profile] worldofmidnight.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I like it more too. C: I still love OOT, but saving the world means a whole lot more when you get to know the NPCs.

[identity profile] kalorii.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this secret.

Yes, okay, OoT came out first and MM wouldn't have existed. OoT felt very minimalistic to me story-wise and I felt that MM did the storytelling much better. I actually cared about the characters and what happened to them with different decisions being made. So many people trash on MM because they can't handle that it has a time limit, believing that it's going to hinder them. If they looked further, they'd learn that time really isn't a problem. :P

Very unpopular opinion but that's just how I feel.

BLASPHEMER!

Haha, no. But seriously, I could never get into MM. But to each their own!

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
I did, too. Not that OoT wasn't great, but I liked MM for its more unique story and gameplay. Also, very few games made me care for nearly all the characters, mainly because you help them with their problems. To see your efforts pay off and seeing them happy was, well, satisfying.

[identity profile] peeperoonie.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
My flatmate was determined that I would be indoctrinated in the way of the True Game Geek when I first met him and had me start with the Zelda games...MM first for some reason. While I have not completed either game (*sigh* Someday I'll guy 'em for the Wii shop or something), MM's atmosphere struck me much more than OOT. The creepy moon looming overhead, the time limit. I didn't get far enough into the game to truely appeciate it's mechanics, but the game struck me as something different and I'm always surprised to hear some people regarding it poorly. Is there any other game quite like it?
