Eh, I like it. Especially the fact that Martin Sheen is not acting in that one scene (you know which one, in the room, with the ceiling fan). He was on LSD for real and his freaking out was genuine. You're right that there's no plot and Marlon Brando can't act, but IDK, I still enjoyed it. I can understand why people hate it though.

Also, my father-in-law (who served three tours of duty in Vietnam) said that Apocalypse Now was the only Vietnam War movie he had seen that he felt was accurate. WTF it's not even about Vietnam! But there you go. Just throwing that out there.

I think your father-in-law said that because more than just capturing "the war" like most war films do, the film captured the sheer absurdity of it all, the insanity and unfairness of being trapped in what was essentially a meat grinder, all for some nebulous goal that nobody really cared about anymore. It's both a pro-war movie and anti-war movie, which in a way reflects the character of Willard.

I think the whole dichotomy of the film is perhaps best explained in the Redux version's French plantation sequence, during the dinner scene and the bedroom scene.

Oh yeah, I know.

It's just funny because it's not really all that accurate at all, it's not so much a historical movie or a war movie as much as it's trying to make a point about the psychological attitude of the time. Usually when I tell people this that my father-in-law said this, they laugh or don't believe me. (Also I find it appropriate that someone in this thread mentioned how stupid The Green Berets is, because he saw that movie when it came out, after returning from Vietnam, and he hated it so much he walked out. It was one of the only movies he paid to see where he left the theatre.)

I really think a lot of people who hate the movie either don't really care about Vietnam or the time period and don't get how rare this approach to the war was at the time (even now!) since most movies about the war were LIKE The Green Berets where it's your typical war movie about how noble the American cause in Vietnam is, etc. The only other movie I know of, right off hand, that tried this approach was Platoon and I still haven't seen it .

I also forgot to mention how much I love the original end credits (where they're destroying the set)
