I think it made more sense in the context of the post-vietnam war zeitgeist. I tried once to explain the insidious depth of the cold war to people, but it's tough to explain how truly low you can feel about humanity when you really, truly believe the world might end any day.

I'll admit I LOVE this movie. It's one of my top ten. But maybe because compare to The Green Berets, it's a work of...less suck.

Still, no judgment on you if you don't like it. I'd strongly suspect it's because the movie hasn't aged very well and cinematography has change a LOT!

(I am curious as to what you think the one good scene is....?)

Tolkein wrote a very long series of books about walking. Sometimes they sang while they walked, and a lot of times they stopped walking to eat or sing about eating or sing about eating and walking while walking.

There was a ring, too, and people fought in the background. Sometimes.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I like it. Especially the fact that Martin Sheen is not acting in that one scene (you know which one, in the room, with the ceiling fan). He was on LSD for real and his freaking out was genuine. You're right that there's no plot and Marlon Brando can't act, but IDK, I still enjoyed it. I can understand why people hate it though.

Also, my father-in-law (who served three tours of duty in Vietnam) said that Apocalypse Now was the only Vietnam War movie he had seen that he felt was accurate. WTF it's not even about Vietnam! But there you go. Just throwing that out there.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think your father-in-law said that because more than just capturing "the war" like most war films do, the film captured the sheer absurdity of it all, the insanity and unfairness of being trapped in what was essentially a meat grinder, all for some nebulous goal that nobody really cared about anymore. It's both a pro-war movie and anti-war movie, which in a way reflects the character of Willard.

I think the whole dichotomy of the film is perhaps best explained in the Redux version's French plantation sequence, during the dinner scene and the bedroom scene.

You have so little taste on so many levels I can't even pontificate about it.

Heart of Darkness, tough guy: read it.

Heart of Darkness, tough guy: read it.

Ouch. :D

But yeah... read it. Awsome book.

Oh no! I'm sorry it's not your cup of tea. It's been my favourite movie since I first saw it maybe thirteen years ago? I was really young but totally into it and the layers kept unfolding as I got oleder.

Then again, I HATE the redux version. It's just so banal. Meh!

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-09-15 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
What's wrong with the redux version?

Okay, I can sympathize, in a way. I don't really like war movies, and that movie is kind of boring and overlong. HOWEVER, I can appreciate the immense effort that went into making it (I'm seriously surprised it didn't kill Francis Ford Coppola). I can appreciate the pure fucking genius of taking "Heart of Darkness" and retelling it through the eyes of the Vietnam War. I can appreciate that it is a true work of cinematic art. But do I enjoy it? No, I don't really enjoy watching it. I've always compared it to Pink Floyd. I love that those guys made rock and roll into some kind of high art, and their storytelling and talent for imagery are beyond compare. But their music just isn't to my taste, so yes, I've been known to say, "I don't like Pink Floyd." But I think you can respect certain works of art without actually liking them, and that's the stance I take on both "Apocalypse Now" and Pink Floyd.

Actually, it was edited.

I might agree with you if you were talking about the "redux" release which is a bit ridiculous.

[identity profile] angary.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that movie. I don't hate it as much as you do, but I've always felt so... blah about it. And HoD always made me want to fall asleep. I know, I know, I have no taste!

[identity profile] adaveen.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE YOU!!!!!!

[identity profile] hihotiho.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Don't worry, some people are even stranger. Apocalypse Now is probably my favourite film ever, but I hate Heart of Darkness with the hate of a hateful hater hating life.

[identity profile] ariseishirou.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I and a friend watched this movie quite possibly the best way it could be watched. We fell asleep after the first 20 minutes or so and woke up for the last fifteen.

I cannot even begin to describe how trippy that was, especially disoriented and sleepy.

...I came away from it thinking it was amazing >_>

[identity profile] jonathankorman.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
This may sound strange, but I strongly recommend you see Hearts of Darkness, the documentary Coppola's wife made about the making of Apocalypse Now. I think both are great films, but Hearts is not a flattering portrayal of anyone involved.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh. I thought it was boring, too.
