"Standards" for art have actually always weirded me out. Really--if it's not your thing, okay, but no matter how "bad" it may seem to you, it must appeal to somebody. Like, you know, the person receiving the gift.

Look, artistic sensibilities vary and all, but we're talking art exchanges. You might have actual skill and labor for hours making someone something very special, only to receive a piece of art that consists of repulsive lumpy chibis that in no way resemble the characters of whatever fandom it is.

It just sucks, and there's a big difference between "this isn't my style," which is okay, and "this person cannot draw for beans," in which case they should know better than to enter an art exchange.

I can understand being disappointed, but that is the problem with being exceptionally good at anything--you just have to deal with the fact that some people don't live up to your skill level.

This goes double for art exchanges/fic exchanges, and if it is that big of a deal, you can always ask for/find a sample of their artwork before slaving over something unique.

That's not how it's worked in any exchange of any type I've ever participated in. It's usually a circle exchange so the person you're creating for isn't the person who's making something for you - you don't know the person who is making something for you.

I understand your point about being good at anything - however, I am NOT a good enough artist to assume that my artwork is at all sufficient to please someone in an exchange, and so (because I have two brain cells to rub together) I don't volunteer to participate in them. I can still draw for myself and post stuff anywhere I like, but I'm not going to ruin an exchange for someone else with my own crummy artwork (and I've seen WAYYYY worse than mine in some fests).

I just don't understand how people delude themselves that their lumpy chibis or whatever are appropriate to gift someone. :/ That's also a problem where, when lumpy chibi-type art IS posted, everyone leaves positive comments (so as not to hurt any feelings) and that only reinforces the presence of subpar art.

I've gotten into spectacular amounts of wank over this. Most people simply cannot tell the difference, and the lousy artists are not good enough to know that they *suck.* If you can't deal with the sprogs, you're better off just not participating.

Oh, forgive me, but that's total bullshit. Of COURSE people can tell the difference. Even if you just look at the comments on various gift exchange posts you can see a glaring difference between genuine exuberant praise and the LJ-comment equivalent of opening up a puke-green sweater with orange puffballs on Christmas morning and having to fake excitement to your Auntie Mildred.

In my experience, touchy, self-deluding fifteen-year-olds who harbor secret dreams of being the next Rob Liefeld believe whatever the hell they want. Especially when they surround themselves with similarly tasteless little friends who keep feeding their egos. Try critiquing them, and you get pounced on for not getting their "style."

I don't mean this in a narcissistic way, but with a reference I could rattle off a fairly good realistic pen sketch people would like in fifteen minutes. That's because I've spent years practicing and DRAWING DRAWING DRAWING and it's developed skill, not effort.

If I were to take part in an exchange, though, I'd think a lot about what I was drawing and spend at least a few hours on it and make it very detailed and try to create something I think the person I'm creating it for would like- that's not skill, it's effort. I'd rather get something with a lot of effort put into it by someone who genuinely cared about giving me a nice gift than a technically-great piece someone put little to no effort into. No skill and no effort is what I think a lot of people here are talking about and that would suck too, but, uh, either way.

Don't get me wrong! I'd be happy to have either and would appreciate either. But for me it wouldn't be about skill but more the love put into a gift, and if I'd spent hours on something nice and got something (technically shitty looking or not) that obviously had little love or care put into it, I wouldn't complain as to not seem like an ass or hurt the giver's feelings, but I would probably not be happy :(

It's like money spent on a tangible gift vs how thoughtful it is, I guess? An expensive or rare gift can be cool but if it's not what you wanted and shows no insight by the giver (or shows the opposite) then I'd prefer something cute from the dollar store tbqh

MAYBE THAT'S CONCEITED AND SELFISH. it probably is. I was brought up to appreciate anything I'm given. I do, but I can't really help being moved more by some gifts than others and I don't really blame people who put effort into one of those things and get little back in return for being disappointed
