For the record, I'm the person who came up with the concept of Yuletart, and I am currently the admin for the fest.

Here's the thing: What you're talking about? Yuletart is not about. It was never conceived to be about what you seem to think it's about. From the very start, I conceived it as an art fest that was about generosity and fun, not skill. Art is such a subjective thing, which is why our standard is about personal effort, not how "good" or even "polished" the artist is. Yuletart is about celebrating all types of art and all types of artists, whether they be amateurs or polished professionals.

I do understand where you're coming from, which is why I'm bothering to clarify. There isn't a "standard" to be "substandard" to, as you say, because that's not what we're about. A lot of fests are, but we're not one of them. If that makes you uncomfortable, that's cool, but we like that our fest is about the joy of giving and the joy of creating and promoting the act of making art, not what you get in return.

I get that Yuletart isn't about some gathering of ~elite artists~ or anything, and I don't think fests should be. Fandom is a place of amateurs, and that's a lovely thing.

My argument is that giving a shoddy piece of work isn't really in the spirit of "the joy of giving". And giving a piece of art that is both shoddy and requires little effort is neither in the spirit of "the joy of giving" nor even "the joy of creating".

The joy of giving is about knowing that the person receiving the gift will like it. In a fest context, if you know that you haven't got the skills to create something which someone else will like, then it seems selfish to join such a fest - since you're clearly joining more for the joy of receiving rather than giving.

This is why I'm trying to explain the distinction to you. From the start, we've made it very clear that Yuletart is about making art together and that all skill levels are welcome. I fully comprehend that most fests aren't like ours, but as mentioned above, it has always been right there in black and white, and you surely are aware of what you're getting into. For me, the fun of Yuletart has never been what I got back, it's the opportunity to create something. What I get back is just gravy that everyone gets to enjoy.

I really do understand what you're trying to say, so I'm not sure if I'm just not communicating clearly enough or if we just have vastly skewed perceptions on what this sort of thing is about. I really like that all kinds of artists feel comfortable with participating in Yuletart. We stress that effort is important regardless of skill (And we have, FTR, returned art because it clearly hadn't had enough effort applied). The whole concept of "you should know if you're not good enough" is just unbelievably saddening to me, and it certainly isn't what I want in my fest.

I guess we just value different things/have different principles, then. You're concerned with creating a welcoming environment for artists and creating art together; that's fair enough. I think that in a gift context, what matters more than the enjoyment one gets from creating is the joy that one can give to the recipient, and if one is incapable of giving said joy, then it is politer to simply not participate.

I think this line of yours sums it up, really: The whole concept of "you should know if you're not good enough" is just unbelievably saddening to me, and it certainly isn't what I want in my fest.

Perhaps I'm just not a person who values that kind of affirmation-based interaction over realising one's own ability/being 'good enough'. Maybe it's partly a cultural thing; I'm not from the US, and affirmation isn't a big part of my culture. :D;;

I hadn't actually realised that Yuletart was, at heart, a community-ish thing about making art together (as opposed to simply being a fandom art exchange like many others), so thanks for clarifying. It's interesting that you've returned art before where lack of effort was evident, and I'm glad to know that.

Anyway, thanks again for all this clarification. This really seems like a "We must agree to disagree" thing, so I'm probably bowing out after this comment.
