OP
(Anonymous) 2010-09-16 06:55 am (UTC)(link)My argument is that giving a shoddy piece of work isn't really in the spirit of "the joy of giving". And giving a piece of art that is both shoddy and requires little effort is neither in the spirit of "the joy of giving" nor even "the joy of creating".
The joy of giving is about knowing that the person receiving the gift will like it. In a fest context, if you know that you haven't got the skills to create something which someone else will like, then it seems selfish to join such a fest - since you're clearly joining more for the joy of receiving rather than giving.

I really do understand what you're trying to say, so I'm not sure if I'm just not communicating clearly enough or if we just have vastly skewed perceptions on what this sort of thing is about. I really like that all kinds of artists feel comfortable with participating in Yuletart. We stress that effort is important regardless of skill (And we have, FTR, returned art because it clearly hadn't had enough effort applied). The whole concept of "you should know if you're not good enough" is just unbelievably saddening to me, and it certainly isn't what I want in my fest.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-16 07:43 am (UTC)(link)I think this line of yours sums it up, really: The whole concept of "you should know if you're not good enough" is just unbelievably saddening to me, and it certainly isn't what I want in my fest.
Perhaps I'm just not a person who values that kind of affirmation-based interaction over realising one's own ability/being 'good enough'. Maybe it's partly a cultural thing; I'm not from the US, and affirmation isn't a big part of my culture. :D;;
I hadn't actually realised that Yuletart was, at heart, a community-ish thing about making art together (as opposed to simply being a fandom art exchange like many others), so thanks for clarifying. It's interesting that you've returned art before where lack of effort was evident, and I'm glad to know that.
Anyway, thanks again for all this clarification. This really seems like a "We must agree to disagree" thing, so I'm probably bowing out after this comment.
