Of course you can, anon! I do :)

[identity profile] phoeliac.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Not asexual, but I always assumed that it was possible, given the number of asexuals in fandom, and how much of fandom is shipping.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-16 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup it's possible. I've been doing the same thing since forever.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-16 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, why worry about fitting into a certain label or category? Do what makes you happy. No two people enjoy the same thing the same way - stop overthinking it.

Labels just get too confusing - I'd have to introduce myself as a "romantically-inclined asexual with romantic feelings for both genders" which is just way too much of a mouthful. I'm a person. I do things. I've been in love with guys and girls, and I enjoy reading and writing romance. But I have no interest in having sex. None of that defines me, nor any other arbitrary rule of "you must do and feel this to identify as asexual".

(Sorry for the rant, I just get annoyed at all the "I thought I was straight/gay/lesbian/asexual, except blahblahblah". Does it really matter that much?)

[identity profile] maskitheclown.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Panromantic asexual. Or Biromantic asexual in your case I guess.
Sounds so fucking cool!

Also, yes, labels do matter to some people. Maybe only for a while, maybe they change and bend with life, but yeah, they do matter to some. Especially if you felt something your whole life and thought you were the only one feeling it and then you suddenly find out that it's so "common" there's actually a name for it. Or if you felt a bit off your whole life and one day you read a definition of something and it just clicks and you go "fuck yes! That's me! That's who I am!"

It's awesome if you never needed a label, but I for one am still relishing mine.

[identity profile] skylar-inari.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not even sure why you'd consider that an issue? And I say that as someone who is asexual and reads and ships slash and het ships a great deal...?

[identity profile] maskitheclown.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking for myself (not OP):

It can be an issue because if I find fanfic somewhat of a turnon, or hot, or whatever, then I inevitably start wondering if maybe I just haven't found the right person yet. Which I hate for the same reason I hate it when people say "maybe you just haven't found the right man yet" to a lesbian. And that drags in a whole other set of insecurities and questions.

[identity profile] rampant-chaos8.livejournal.com 2010-09-16 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, anon. I'm asexual, but there are plenty of things I ship like Fed Ex.

[identity profile] reanimatrix.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
You can enjoy het, slash, and even smut and still be asexual. It's like being worried about enjoying fantasy even though you're not an elf. :P It's the way I see it anyway.

Hahaha. Excellent analogy - I've compared my own writing of sex scenes to being much like writing about someone casting magic spells. I have no desire to cast spells myself or to have them cast on me, and quite frankly it's never going to happen, but it's an interesting enough idea to explore in fiction.

[identity profile] reanimatrix.livejournal.com 2010-09-18 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I worry sometimes because I'm asexual but I enjoy writing sex scenes and apparently do quite well (I have had sex before, it wasn't what it was cracked up to be, I kinda wanted it to just end) with them, so I feel like it'll come into question or I'll be accused of lying or something, but it's like, I also enjoy writing about people having gun fights and I never intend to be involved in one of those! What is so different about writing a sex scene?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm asexual. I enjoy het and slash fanfic, and what passes for sexy tiems in paranormal romance novels. It's interesting to see how people envision sexual relationships, and I kind of find it fascinating, even if I don't have the slightest interest in participating in one myself. So you're not the only one!

There are also asexuals who still enjoy emotional romance, even if they aren't interested in the physical. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asexuality#Romantic_relationships
