To me the lesbian relationship feels really awkward as well, but that's because when we were first introduced to Maya I thought she was a new mom on the block and then she was written as a teenager and then sexual tension with Emily happened and it was such a jarring twist for me that I couldn't really get used to it. It still feels really awkward to me because I know the actress herself is a lot older than a teenager, even though she's aged really well a teenager role is a bit on the creepy side to me.

I think Toby's a creeper though so I guess I think both of the relationships are pretty creepy. I liked Toby/Emily first first started with the tentative gifts and meeting up but it quickly grew into awkwardville for me.

I feel you anon. Watching that relationship unfold was like reading every high school AU ever. Repressed athlete meets free spirited artist! Athlete is conflicted! And pretty! You should come out because I know what's best for you despite having known you for two weeks! Misunderstandings! More misunderstandings! You promised you'd tell your parents! Manufactured relationship drama! Except at least in every high school AU ever, at least the love interest doesn't disappear for like a million years only to return when the other girl needs a reason to ~angst~.

I don't really think it makes you a 'phobe at all, if your reasons for liking ET over EM are more than just "EW GIRLS KISSING IS GROSS." To each his own, really. I like EA best and everyone thinks the EA shippers are strange. I'm not an ET fan because of the books, but I like that EM is boring but sweet because it's more normal that the loads of other pairings on this show.

Not saying you are, but trying to explain why people might think you are. They might think you're projecting your dislike for a f/f couple onto the writing. Really what you don't like it's that they're two girls, but you're making excuses and saying it's the writing. They're probably wondering if a badly written straight couple would bother you as much.

Emily/Maya is absolutely terrible, I was sitting cringing throughout. It is the writing - it's awful.

I shipped Emily/Toby the most, and I'm the one that almost always goes for the femslash.

I'm pretty sure anon is trying to explain the thought processes of the people who think secret!anon is being homophobic. It wasn't terribly clear though.

Emily/Maya is terribly written and not very affecting, at least to me; I like it mostly in spite of myself. But pretty girls! Kissing! On screen! Femslashers so rarely get a canon ship WHAT CHOICE DO I HAVE.

I can't bring myself to ship Emily with anyone, tbh. I like her and Toby as friends, but she seems pretty clearly gay, so I can't see them as anything more. Maya is worse because she doesn't even have her own personality. And Ali is just mean to her. The only ones I can see her with are her friends, lol.

Eh, I think both ships are pretty badly executed tbh (on the show at least, haven't read the books), but you're not homophobic, b/c your reasoning has nothing to do with the relationship being same-sex. If you worry that fandom will perceive you as homophobic, then it's understandable, because you know how quick fandom is to jump to conclusions like that, in which case I sympathize. But hopefully more perceptive/less defensive fans will know better.
