(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 09:45 am (UTC)(link)This fandom has folks who eagerly find any excuse to demonize Aang's every flaw. But part of Aang's charm is he isn't perfect, that despite him being the is still very much a 12 year old boy trying to navigate the difficult path of growing up as well.

To me, Zuko will always be the real hero of the tale. Because unlike Aang, he acted like one.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)And many of these traits he displayed right up until end of the series. Zuko is hardly a hero above Aang. He was lucky to have people like his uncle and Aang who were willing to look past his garbage and forgive him repeatedly. But despite all that Zuko is still a good person and a good character.
Aang was wrong many times - his insecurities led him to hide the map which he then admitted to and was willing to accept the consequences for, he was impatient and burned Katara which he was clearly upset over and apologized for, he easily got into trouble due to his desire to be normal or be loved. He can be flighty and childish at times. His emotions were at times a problem when he couldn't handle them.
The fandom doesn't demonize Aang, which is the difference. People see he has flaws and much like the Zuko fans, choose to accept the bad and look forward to the good. You seem to nitpick everything Aang does and hold everything against the character including the fandom's liking and enjoyment of Aang. And Aang is a kid and he has a wisdom and spirituality to him. He is both of those things. There is no dodging that. He saved Zuko at the end of the Blue Spirit despite the fact he knew Zuko was an enemy but he had to ask the question: Could we be friends? He saved Zuko again in the Seige of the North when everyone else was willing to leave him to freeze. He knew that getting revenge on the man who killed her mother was not what would help Katara heal. He readily put aside the wrongs done to him by Zuko and welcomed him once he recognized he and Zuko had the same feelings about fire bending, he saw the good in the fire nation kids and knew that he was going to have to defeat the fire lord, but that opinions and attitudes had to change too.
The things people admire about Aang are his ability to be open to others, his notions of forgiveness, seeing the good in others, willingness to help others, his loyalty to his beliefs and culture, his loyalty to his friends and those he loves, his kindness, his belief that not everything can or should be solved with violence, his ability to stand up for what he believes despite the pressure from others, his respect for other cultures and people, etc. And if those are the things the sercret poster and other fans choose to see in Aang, then I say good for them.

I wish they'd taken the time at the finale to have someone -- such as Mai, or Sokka, or maybe even Toph -- argue with him about not killing Ozai, because, let's face it, they would have a problem with him leaving Ozai alive. Even if you think Aang did the right thing, and even if he stuck to his guns, he should have had to argue his side -- again, out loud, to the people it most affected. I wish they'd given us that and left it somewhat up to the viewer whether it was the right thing to do, and they could also show Aang growing up somewhat, willing to face the consequences of his choice maturely, which I didn't feel like he was. Unfortunately, the show seems to think that there won't be any consequences for not killing Ozai, which, realistically, there would be, and Aang would have to answer for them, whether he was right or wrong.
I just felt like the series failed with Aang's character by not letting him grow. Sozin's Comet Aang is much the same as Season 1 Aang, you know?
...Holy long-winded rant, Batman! Sorry about that. And please don't think I'm attacking you -- I'm not! -- I just feel like we saw different things in Aang's character.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)And then you have Zuko who apologizes repeatedly for making the same mistake over and over again. How many times did he apologize to his uncle for betraying him or hurting him only to do it again.
I honestly don't remember if Aang apologized for te map, but he admitted to it and accepted that he screwed up, accepted the consequences, and didn't stop Sokka and Katara from leaving him. And they all worked it out. Especially since he went to such great lengths to get her necklace back. The nice thing about the show was that they worked things out and forgiveness was implied without actually having to hear people say I'm sorry over and over. I would have liked to see Zuko pull Aang aside and truly apologize to him for everything and to actually show some respect for Aang's culture and beliefs, but it never happened.
And aang did argue his side, but his friends refused to listen to him or even accept that he had a differing opinion. And in the end none of them could kill either. Neither Sokka, Suki, or Toph killed Ozai. Zuko didn't have him executed. Zuko didn't kill his sister. Katara didn't kill Ozai or Azula. If Ozai was such a threat, then even if Aang took his bending away and refused to do the deed himself, then why didn't Zuko order Ozai's execution or why didn't one of the other characters finish Ozai off if they disagreed so strongly with Aang's position. Instead, we saw Zuko readily use the mercy Aang showed his father (which. zuko mocked) to get info on his momma and to maybe experience a life change like Zuko did.

Aang's apology was never needed by them.

Um, when was the last time you actually watched the first season? Because that kid is definitely not the same Aang who faced Ozai at the end.
