Except that Aang is treated as though he is perfect, both by the story and the fandom. He never suffers the repercussions of screwing up, or even when he does, somebody is around to convince him he did the right thing anyway. I don't think a character who constantly runs from responsibility, refuses to admit when he's wrong, and won't listen to anyone that says things he doesn't want to hear is hardly a good role model.

I'm also tired of fandom calling him all-knowing and wise, yet brushing off all of his more serious mistakes with "but he's just a kid!" Pick one, because you can't have both. You can't claim he's a mature and wise adult, and then just excuse him as a child for his mistakes whenever it's convenient.

So he never suffered or felt horrible for running away from the Southern Air Temple? We didn't get beaten over the head with how awful it made him feel that he'd abandoned his people? No, Aang isn't perfect. Far from it. He's immature, yeah, terribly so, and he can't seem to wrap his mind around non-Airbender beliefs -- that is to say, he can't even fathom the idea of taking a life if it comes down to it. He goes into RAEG, but it's made to look okay because he's emotional and a child, etc. And none of that is right. Yeah, that sucks. But you can't forget something as fundamental to his character as the fact that he very actively regrets his having abandoned his people when it came time to grow up. That's the ultimate punishment, is knowing he was a coward a hundred years ago.

Does that make him a good role model? I don't know. That's up to each individual. Zuko does nasty things in the show, too. He's disrespectful in S1. I don't think those are traits that should be emulated. But his overall strength is inspiring, just like the things Aang believes -- whether or not he succeeds in putting them to practice -- are admirable. The fact that they're both so flawed that fandom can choose to go one way or the other with them just means that they were written as human beings. How many people do you know who get lauded for being so great when in reality they're selfish brats? That's sort of the case here. And tbh I'm glad that neither Aang nor Zuko are that perfect.

He wasn't treated like he was perfect, which is precisely why Katara kept getting angry at him. Didn't you pay attention? Who is the one blinded by their desire to see something that doesn't exist, hmmmm?

I am struggling to find examples of this. The most I can come up with is the EIP kiss, but even then, he knew he did wrong, and felt shame and embarassment over what he did.
