First off, I think the story was intended to be somewhat satirical, not an 'oh my god this could actually happen' type of deal.

As well, it didn't really deal with privilege in the way I've seen fandom discuss it. The society Harrison Bergeron wasn't about erasing white/male/able/cis/etc privilege, it was about erasing intellectual and physical disparities by reducing everyone to the lowest common denominator. Which I don't think is what the people discussing privilege want. On the contrary, the goal is to remove institutionalized oppression so that everyone has a chance to reach their full potential.

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno, I've seen some people argue for exactly the sort of world in the story. Kinda sad, really.

[identity profile] 1strangepirate.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
what

that is pretty sad augh D:

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-09-18 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I rather gather this is what No Child Left Behind is all about, pretty much.

[identity profile] 1strangepirate.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god this this this this this

OP doesn't get the point of privilege chats and they dont get the point of harrison bergeron

unless they think white/male/cis etc people are automatically born more capable, intelligent, stronger, etc

in which case aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I do not see how this aim is served by claiming that some people are "privileged" by merely being members of some wide group to which many oppressors also belonged, and therefore matter less or need to pay some sort of homage.

"Check your privilege at the door" is a handicap system just like the one described. It targets those who are somehow more advantaged by circumstances (as oposed to any act against others), and seeks to balance it by disadvantaging them.

You really see no middle ground between a racist, sexist, homophobic society and a reverse-eugenic dystopia?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
A sane middle ground between extremes? What madness is this!

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Troll or moron? So hard to tell.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The story is Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut. The movie is also called Harrison Bergeron and is a 1995 made-for-TV movie that's...pretty terrible. There's a decent short film adaptation called 2081, though.

[identity profile] vldtheimpaler.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Doh, I thought Harrison Bergeron was the author. Thanks!

[identity profile] vldtheimpaler.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ty! Yours too!

deleted the first one because damn, what a dumbass grammatical error that was

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I read Harrison Bergeron too, and I'm pretty sure that you're missing the point. In the story, the characters had whatever made them above average taken away. When fandom wanks about privilege it's about giving a voice to people who have been traditionally marginalized. Nobody's taking away someone's ability to concentrate on stuff or be a great intellectual/artist/athlete/whatever. It's about giving stuff to people who don't have it, not taking stuff away from people who do. :/

Plus there's the thing that it was supposed to be a satire and all...

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I kinda want to rad this now. It sounds scary :O

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It is, although that could just be cause I like Kurt Vonnegut's writing. His books are better, though, I think. He does this thing where he gets sidetracked from the main narrative all the time and the book becomes about a dozen different things and then they all fit together sort of at the end. It's not for everybody but I like it a lot.

Also, F!S is boring today. Where's all the "nobody knows I want to fuck this obscure actor" and "I judge you" and "I want to be the Matt to your Mello"? NEEDS MOAR MELLO IN HERE.

very well said, thank you.

[identity profile] vardoeger.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice try.

[identity profile] 1strangepirate.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
THE YEAR WAS 2010, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was whiter than anybody else. Nobody was more male than anybody else. Nobody was abler or ciser than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Privilege General.

pfft, anyway, the story is about forced physical and mental equality, which isn't the same as trying to end/call to attention baseless discrimination and offensively wrong ideas against people

PRIVILEGE CHAT is not and has never been and never will be about disadvantaging intellectuals and athletes in order to create false and forced equality. if you think weighing down a ballerina is the same as trying to give someone who isn't white or isn't male or isn't straight etc the same opportunities as someone who is then you are DUMB

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Misaimed fandom, perhaps?

Their only real argument is that he was an admitted socialist.

But, so was George Orwell. The author of "Animal Farm".

I'd say this is the most hilarious bit of "missing the point" I've ever seen, but the sad thing is, I'VE SEEN THIS ARGUMENT MADE BEFORE!

So I'm not even convinced this is a troll. Oh, sad.

[identity profile] caterfree10.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
akjsfdsjhfgkjhad that story gives me the creeps, yet I love it so. Also, THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THIS WEEK MY ENGLISH CLASS HAS DESCENDED UPON F!S, IS MY ENGLISH PROFESSOR IN THIS COMM?! *FLAILS*

BTW, yeah, you're missing the point of privilege, love.
