It's not about saying, hey, white people have these things that nobody else does, so let's take those things away.

Well... shouldn't it be?

I mean, let's think about this. White people are privileged. Shouldn't we be working toward taking away that privilege, if we want to bring about equality?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
We're working to make most of these things rights for everyone, not privileges.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
And by equalizing people you're taking away the privileging aspect of it, right? Hence, taking away certain privileges by making them no longer privileges.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhh...why can't you just try to raise everyone else up to the same level? If five people has it good and five have it bad, why would you want the goal for everyone to have it bad, instead of for everyone to have it good?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I was trying to say that by taking away the 'privileged' part of a certain thing that is granted to white people and not persons of colour by making it equally available to everyone, it's in a sense taking away their privilege. But aside from that, it's really a question of extremes.

Our planet could not sustain raising the living standards of everyone in the world to the luxurious and wasteful lifestyle of the privileged upper and middleclass in the Western hemisphere. So instead of allowing some people to live in splendour and others to live in squalor, shouldn't we be working to get rid of some of the more wasteful and frivolous things that upper and middle class people spend time and money on?

It doesn't exactly work like that.

Some of the privileges white people have ARE things that everyone should have, and THOSE shouldn't be taken away, no. They are just things everyone should get.

But some of those privileges are things that we get AT THE EXPENSE OF other people.

And yes, those need to be taken away. It's like saying it's not fair for someone to get a head start in a race. You logically can't give EVERYONE a head start, by definition.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
White privilege is a lot of things. Some of it is inherently racist and should go away, like the "I don't have to be in a group with a lot of people who aren't my race if I don't want to".

But a good deal of it is stuff that should be basic rights to everyone, like "People judge me based on my actions/accomplishments/behavior and not on my race" and "I'm never looked at as a representative for my race" and "If I make a bad decision, people won't think it's because of my race". Those aren't bad things. It's bad that they're distributed only to a certain group of people, but those are rights and things that everybody should have.

It's not going to help to take away these last three things from white people. Those are things that should go to everybody. The part about it being a 'privilege' that only white people have should go away, but not the actual non-discrimination itself. "Not getting discriminated against" isn't something that should be taken away from anybody.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
But if you try to make those things available for everyone, you take away the 'privileged' aspect - you're taking away their privilege.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's kind of just semantics though. It's not like "they don't have X and you do, so we're taking away your X." It's more like, "they don't have X and you do, so let's give them one too so that everybody can have one." Even though the 'privilege' status goes away, the important part, which is NOT BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST, doesn't.

So yeah, you're right, sorta. SJ people do want to take away their privilege, in that they want to take away the fact that only one group has certain things that should be universal rights. But the rights themselves are the important part to me, and I've never heard anyone ever claim that we should take away rights from currently privileged groups.

Besides, anybody who gets mad because they want to be the only one who has those rights and now other people do is kind of like the bratty little kid who wants to have all the toys and gets upset whenever any of the other little kids gets one.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just that yes, we do want to take away privileged people's privileges, because they shouldn't have those things as a privilege anyway.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, when you say it like that, it makes it sound like you're taking away what the privileges actually entail. Like, not being discriminated against.

I know what you're actually saying NOW, but it's an easy misunderstanding to make and might not win over supporters who don't want to give up other people not being prejudiced against them.
