I agree with the first two but I've never understood how people use Frollo as an example of what it means to be a Catholic. To follow the teachings of Christ would be to do the exact opposite of what Frollo does, no?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it does say he's a "how-not-to guide"...

[identity profile] roaringmay.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what the secret says, though
"He's just a big how-not-to guide"

[identity profile] respectskater.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's what the OP is saying. S/he called Frollo a "how-not-to guide"

In other news, hell yes, Kurt.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly!

[identity profile] wordfuzion.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon rocks. :)

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hellfire puts the fear of god back into you? That doesn't look like any help at all...

OP here

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, it's a bit of a exaggeration [fear and religion are never a good mix], but still, who can watch the Hellfire scene without freaking out a little about going to hell...

I think this is just fine. Most people would see these as kind of odd sources for inspiration, but they are well thought out characters whose faith informed their creation. Carry on :)

[identity profile] birdboy2000.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I had been raised in a Jewish upbringing as a kid... and hated Hebrew School and going to synagogue and wanted no part of it. When I heard about other religions, it was usually in a fairly negative context - creationists trying to get their nonsense taught in science class, religious fundamentalists blowing stuff up, corruption in the Catholic Church (this was before the child molestation scandal, IIRC), etc.

Nightcrawler really taught me to respect religion, to see that faith can be a good thing for some people. I'm still an atheist, I still detest a lot of things which priests of many faiths do, but characters like him are probably the main reason I'm not one of those angry internet atheists who wants to see religion outlawed today.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! More atheists should be like you!

For the longest time I was really anti-religion. I wouldn't say I was atheist because I still believed in some form of a God.

I think extremist on either side on either side are very off putting. People who don't want part in either are left in a very awkward place in the middle. Which is okay, helps you learn more things.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

But my list is pretty long (how are there so many awesome Catholic characters when religion is rarely specified in entertainment? I guess most Westerners have, or think they have, a decent understanding of Catholicism unlike Baptists or Anglicans? Or maybe it's just more cinematic somehow. IDK, or care)

[identity profile] sensualcoco.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Lol @ Frollo being the "how-not-to guide"

OP here

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Frollo just did it wrong, he did it very wrong...

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Rock on, Anon!

Okay, I'm a lousy Catholic, but a decent Christian, but those first two are my heroes. Kurt did a lot to make me feel like my faith was something that I could be proud of and live devoutly without having to slam people in the face with it. And Hellboy always makes me smile.

Might I suggest adding Father Mulcahy (M*A*S*H) and Michael Carpenter (Dresden Files) to your list of fierce and interesting Catholics?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Father Mulcahy! That man was hardcore! I probably left him out because I was going with my weirder interest, if you will...

[identity profile] thelonebamf.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Whoa... anon... are you me? I was seriously planning on making a secret just like this last night.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm you from the future! Do not fear!

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Those exact characters?

(no subject)

[identity profile] thelonebamf.livejournal.com - 2010-09-20 16:02 (UTC) - Expand

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, I agree about Nightcrawler. And I'm not religious at all. He's one of those characters, like Castiel, who actually almost makes me wish I was. O____o

OP here

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you got to admire anyone who has strong faith like that and not let it go to their head or blind them. :)

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Kurt<3 He's pretty much the only reason I'm not ashamed to call myself a Christian, ha.
ext_19953: (i call him ~*doctor sass*~)

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Hellboy and Nightcrawler = FUCK YEAH
I'm as atheistic as it gets by now, but I was raised Catholic and love & respect a lot of people who are religious, so it makes me happy to see religious characters who are awesome and not total dicks about it.

and I still say Hellfire is heavy shit for a kid's movie.

[identity profile] poke-fu.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This may be my favorite secret ever <3 Rock on, anon.
