To make sure I'm understanding this correctly, you never listened to the song, never even googled the lyrics, but still talked about how shitty it was?

Hm. Okay.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've avoided listening to it for a while.

Jesus, f!s is doing horribly at reading comprehension tonight.

[identity profile] brianna-aisling.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that the rest of the secret talks about the first time they actually listened to it, so you know, not my reading comprehension.

[identity profile] fukkafyla.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Your reading comprehension is still failing to deliver. It talks about the first time they heard it in a while.

[identity profile] brianna-aisling.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
It said that they avoided listening to it for a while. Not in a while.

Now, if you'd like to split hairs, I can give you that it never clarifies if they had heard it at one point and then chose to avoid it or hadn't heard it at all, but either interpretation is valid, because either interpretation can fit. However, considering they didn't even know what the song was about, I'd be willing to bet they never listened to the song, or never listened to the whole song, and just blew it off. Either way, they still judged the song before they knew what they were talking about.

[identity profile] brianna-aisling.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? You comment to nit-pick against me but act like I'm the one raging when I explain my point of view?

Lame.

[identity profile] juicypuffin.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"For a while" means they've heard it before. Explain to me the difference that you're seeing in this context between "for" and "in", because while it's true there is a difference, there's not in this secret that I can see.

It seems clear to me from this context that if they had never heard it they would have said "I hadn't heard the song before" or something similar. The very fact that it's on their ipod, they mentioned disliking it previously, they are a fan of the band, proves they've heard it before.

The point about not listening to the lyrics... it's true that you can hear a song without associating the lyrics to you then come back years later, or listen without knowing the real lyrics due to mishearing etc. To me it seems the OP did the former, not the latter.

[identity profile] brianna-aisling.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, I'll give that point, because which to use does depend on the context, but saying they avoided it it for a while isn't the same as saying they hadn't listened to it in a while. That's more what I should have focused on.

The very fact that it's on their ipod, they mentioned disliking it previously, they are a fan of the band, proves they've heard it before.

Not necessarily. If they had bought the whole album it was on, but never deleted that song, then it could be on there without them having listened to it, especially since we don't know at what point the album was bought- before or after the OP decided on this point of view. And being a fan of the band doesn't mean they've listened to every song out there.

You know, I probably wouldn't have ever commented on the lyrics point, except the OP themselves specifically commented that the song was poorly written. They themselves implied that they supposedly knew enough of the lyrics to know how well they were written and what the content was to come to that conclusion- and yet somehow missed the meaning behind the lyrics all together? I'm sorry, but I don't buy that. You want to argue overplayed, fine. There are plenty of songs that I've not actually listened to that annoy me because every time I turn on the radio, it's playing. You want to argue poorly written, then perhaps you should actually know what is in the song first.

[identity profile] juicypuffin.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't mean they "missed the point of the lyrics". It means they never associated the lyrics with themselves before. It could be they changed as a person, so previously the lyrics really did have nothing to do with them. Or it could be they just hadn't realized it. For example, one day you wake up and realize you act just like your father. Or one day you realize you're making the same personality mistakes you made ten years ago. It's the same thing - you know your father quite well, you know what you have been doing these past ten years, but you simply never realized it before.

[identity profile] fukkafyla.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm "nit-picking" when I point out to you that you're still wrong?

It said that they avoided listening to it for a while. Not in a while.

lol okay.

[identity profile] brianna-aisling.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Focusing on one particular element is nit-picking. In this case the focus was on a word choice and an interpretation of that word choice. You're commenting on my interpretation of that word choice was nit-picking, yes.

I don't mind being called wrong. You are certainly not the first person to call me wrong, nor will you be the last. I actually enjoy a good debate, especially over grammatical semantics. So, when I say you nit-pick something I'm not attacking you, I'm calling the act what it is. And if you'd like to offer a response more intelligent than "lol okay." I'll be happy to continue discussing this with you.

[identity profile] fukkafyla.livejournal.com 2010-09-20 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
There is nothing intelligent or worthwhile about this discussion. You're questioning the wording of a secret on f!s and people are pointing out that you've blatantly misinterpreted it. I'll leave you to yourself now.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I download an entire album and put it on my iPod and not listen to the songs I don't like, maybe OP does the same thing.
