Tell them they can come with you. I'm not kidding. Get them to come to the convention entrance, have your friend meet you there and present your friend to your parents. Promise them them that you won't leave for any reason and suggest that they come pick you up when you're ready to leave if they're really stressed about it.

The fact that you even want to ask permission probably means that you're a good kid and your parents probably trust you quite a bit already. Just show them that they're right and that you ARE trustworthy and you'll be fine.

I agree with this, especially if you're under 18.

But yeah, don't try to sneak around it. Be up front about it. Sometimes you'll be surprised by how your parents will react (in a good way).

A good suggestion is to try to meet up somewhere public, and there are a lot of big open places where you can do that at a convention. After all, you may trust them, but it might help put your parents' minds at ease.

I did this all the time when I was younger. I had my parents drop me off in a public place where my internet friend was waiting for me. My parents would see that my friend was a kid my age and not an old pervert and off they went, leaving us alone. I'll grant you that it's a bit (a lot) embarrassing sometimes but looking back, it never actually did anything but reassure my parents.

And yes about the surprising thing! Back when I was in 8th grade I actually wanted to go to a fandom-meet where everyone else was in their 20s or older. I did get to go but with my mom accompanying me. She stayed across the room and everything, let me pretend I was there on my own but didn't let me go with the group when they left the meeting place. I was very upset at the time but looking back I can't help but be amazed that she let me meet with a group of strangers from the internet under any conditions so...

I didn't really get into the fandom aspect of meeting people before I was 18. I read a lot of fan fiction but I didn't participate in anything besides leaving reviews. I met my first internet friend at an anime con, and my parents were nervous about it, but they could hardly stop me because I was a legal adult. By that point it was the second convention I had gone to in another state with my friends from college (who they hadn't met yet), and for me the surprise was how much they respected my judgement.

My parents are much more relaxed about it now, but then again, I've been hanging out with my internet friends (mostly at cons) for about 7 years now.

And your mom sounds really awesome. I don't know if mine would do that, when I was in 8th grade.

lol yeah they do get used to it. I don't even tell my parents if I'm going to meet specific people at conventions anymore because they know that meeting people is kinda my goal at most conventions (there used to be very few cons around here and so all the same people are always at the same cons, so you'd end up with a bunch of convention friends that you'd see once a year ^^.) I recently manage to completely stump my parents though by telling them I was meeting someone I know from a convention. They're so used to me meeting internet friends at conventions that the other way around broke their brains a bit.

I did get into fandom quite young though, and the only fellow anime fans I knew were through the internet (one of them was actually living one street away from my house!). So yeah I started all that meeting stuff at a fairly early age. My first convention I was in 10th grade and my father drove me there and back (even though it was a 3 hour drive) with a friend and since then I've been going practically every year. 12th grade I think was the first time my friends and I took the train to go to the convention...(though like I say, I was relatively young, I was still 17 for most of my first semester in college). Interestingly, I've actually been meeting fewer people from the internet as I've grown older...

Pfft my mom is the clingiest, most stressed out person in the world but she's cool with quite a lot of things if we're within her eyesight. I think we've reached a sort of balance by now even though my friends still find it weird how much we talk on the phone.

This is probably the best advice here. If you're meeting a friend, your parents would probably want to meet them as well--parents like to know their kid's friends. Plus, they get a look around at the con, which is always an educational experience. Heck, most cons I've been to actually have some "for parents" panels to explain to mundy parental units just what their crazy offspring are getting up to in the most non-freak-out-inducing way possible.
