Isidore Rosenfeld, the grandfatherly cardiologist and health editor of Parade magazine, reported having observed an open-heart operation in China in the 1970s. Several other American physicians accompanied him. The patient was a 28-year-old woman. According to Dr. Rosenfeld, who took a photograph of the patient during surgery, her only anesthetic had been a single acupuncture needle in the right ear, connected to an electrical source. Dr. Rosenfeld reported that she underwent repair of her mitral valve through a midline sternal (breast bone) incision and remained awake throughout the procedure. He also wrote that the patient had “no intravenous needle in her arm.”
... is merely heresay. I'd prefer a medical, peer-reviewed paper from a medical journal. I'm sorry if I'm picky, but this is human welfare we're talking about. :)

I do see here that it says it's in combination with chemical anesthesia, however this is NIH-reviewed which adds some weight to it. I do like to see alternative methods tested in this way, in case they DO have some positive effects. Thanks again!

I'm actually pretty conservative myself, but after having my brother go through terminal illness (different cancer, scarily similar circumstances), I've seen the agonizing side effects of both chemo and bone marrow transplants, I'm willing to keep an open mind.
Now, to the point of Satoshi Kon, you're also quite right that no alternative medicine would ever cure him and we both know that. But the treatments he was getting (acupuncture and chiropractic) were to treat a numb leg, which they likely thought at the outset was a pinched nerve or back problem.
Really, I think the angle we need in medicine is a way to detect cancers earlier via blood or some other protein test. That way traditional medicines can offer a true cure, and not just a slow, painful extension of life. (ugh... hopping off soapbox now!)
