I sympathise. I'm reminded of a fandom friend I've had since forever who's a few years younger than me; his parents are toxic, overbearing people who were mortified of the idea of their kid even leaving the house alone, never mind meeting up with someone from the internets. We didn't live that far apart. So we started meeting up IRL anyway - not cons, just coffee and shopping. I srsly think this helped everyone involved, especially the parents, who were forced to adjust their ideas about how much control it was reasonable to have over a child in their mid-to-late teens. I am kinda baffled at above comments that assume all parental control is reasonable and carried out in your 'best interests'; I figured everyone knew some people with great parents, and others with absolutely crazy parents, and even good parents can be guilty of heinous helicoptering which is likely to extend to a fear of fandom.
