Actually, it pretty much was about the science mindfucks. Everything we learned was about adding up to the larger mystery of what was going on here/why were these people chosen/what IS the island? I never expected it to give us a concrete explanation, but yeah, something that satisfied that storyline to some degree was what the show was about.

I don't think it was about anything to do with whether or not these people would meet in the afterlife before they shuffled off to the next world.
