That's the problem. They're intended to be funny, but every time I watched them, I didn't laugh or even smile. My patience with humor predicated on the viewer/listener's prejudices grows thin. Also, I don't like pointless pop-culture references.

Okay, you don't have to like it.

What bugs me is that people think it's the shittiest thing ever when it's really, really not. It's no masterful artistic show, but it's good for a laugh.

It isn't the worst televison program ever. I simply can't appreciate it because I find it too offensive to be amusing. Of course not everyone should like what I like or dislike what I dislike. Other people are entitled to enjoying South Park, Family Guy, or whatever may intrigue them.

I was just listing various interests of mine that traditionally attracted GLBT fanbases as opposed to just straight men

I'm a gay dude too, bro.

We're only partially kindred spirits, but God, it's very refreshing right now to meet someone other than an angry straight person. I'm genderless-identified and seem to be devoid of the capacity for sexual attraction, and naively underestimated the number of straight people reading F!S. While I anticipated that they would be confused, I didn't expect that they would be offended. They must have inferred that I was insulting their favorite music, books, or movies; I was just saying that I'd lost interest in them. In any event, I apologize for all the offense I've inadvertently caused.

[identity profile] interrobangings.livejournal.com 2010-09-19 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I'm not offended. Offending me is hard to do, man.

Other people? Not so much. But hey, we're on LJ. Everyone here is incredibly sensitive.

Good luck, brah.

Well personally, I'm queer and love musical theatre.

And I'm really, really tired of people thinking there's some sort of connection between the two. If there is one, I sure don't see it. I found your secret there almost funny in that I've recently gotten a little more interested in classic rock, which you've apparently abandoned for being "too straight," although I don't see my sexuality as having much to do with it. Guess I'm doing it wrong?

That was MY problem with #113 (although I haven't stated so up there). Never mind that musical theatre is heteronormative like whoa (seriously, not aimed at straight people? what planet do you live on?) - what the hell does sexuality have to do with the music you listen to, anyway?

(Anonymous) 2010-09-20 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
No, we're just two different people. There's nothing wrong with someone else enjoying classic rock; it simply no longer appeals to me a listener. In my early adolescence, I listened to classic rock and hair metal almost exclusively, but I eventually grew weary of the focus on straight men singing about sex. I had been allowing straight male perspectives to dominate my views on sex and gender for too long.

While most musical theatre plots, as with any medium, are about straight couples, my point wasn't that straight people didn't enjoy musical theatre. It was that more women (and gay men), on average, attend musical theatre productions than straight men do. I apologize if you thought I was stereotyping. If that's the case, then I understand all the vitriol.
