I worked for a doctor, and you know what? She would pass out whatever medications the latest pharma rep would give her samples of, after coming to the office and buying all of us lunch/presents. Those meals/swag were totally worth using our patients as test subjects, right? Which is what that is. How is that better than what you consider quackery? And that is very widespread.

On the flip side, some people who are struggling financially depend a lot on being able to try free samples rather than sweating blood to pay for a small prescription of some expensive drug only to discover it doesn't work.

It really sucks when your meds belong to a class of drug that you CAN'T get a free sample of, and then when you go to the pharmacy you discover you're not actually getting drugs today because, oh, the medication your doctor wrote you a prescription for costs HALF A MONTH'S PAY. Not worth it when you don't know if it'll work.

My family doctor hands out samples LIKE they're swag, and that's pretty much why we keep seeing her even though she's a dumbass. If I'm strapped for cash, I can usually avoid having to pay for my asthma medications at all if I claim at the very end of an appointment that I've misplaced my inhalers. She just grabs me a handful of samples rather than actually write me a prescription. And my sister (who is depressed and has a panic disorder) wouldn't have even been willing to TRY anti-depressants if it wasn't a simple matter of having them put right in her hands in the office. She doesn't turn down free stuff at least, and she got to see the difference with some of her symptoms alleviated.

Free samples = not all bad.
